VON at London Vegfest October 2019

The VON crew ventured out from their rural idylls of Cornwall, Wales, Oxfordshire, Norwich, Kent, Yatesbury and sunny Manchester to make our annual pilgrimage to Vegfest and The Smoke of London Town.
Our hand crafted signs and brightly coloured banners transformed our section of the London Olympia exhibition centre. Shumei created a healing aura around our stall with their free healing and wonderful veganic veg. The VON volunteers were as brilliant as ever, informing visitors who visited our stall of what VON is about and directing them to books and answering questions.
Next to the VON stand was our veganic talks area with a great line up of speakers who kept the audiences informed and inspired throughout the weekend.
Many thanks to our helpers, speakers, visitors and welcome to everyone who signed up to become new VON members/supporters.
We filmed all the talks.
Below is the video of the talk by Jo Kidd and her story of Vegan Organics Kent an emerging off-grid veganic farm in East Kent. You can read about her story in the latest issue of Growing Green International.

Winner of the Vegepod

VON raffled a Vegepod at London Vegfest. I'm pleased to announce the winner was Olivia St Clair, this is what she had to say:
"“On my journey to become self sustainable, this veg pod will drastically increase the amount of organic foods I can grow all year round. My partner and I were so inspired to see Vegpod at Vegfest 2019 and now couldn’t be happier and more excited to win our own pod!  We will be actively lowering our carbon footprint by consuming our own produce and now have a way of growing our own seedlings for our next year's outdoor crop.”

As friends of the Vegan Organic Network, Vegepod are offering all VON subscribers 10% off the RRP of any Vegepod with stand or trolley combination. To redeem your discount, enter VON10 on check out at www.vegepod.co.uk.

New funding for woodland creation

The UK Government has created a new scheme, called the Woodland Carbon Guarantee, ‘to help boost tree-planting rates in the fight against climate change’.

The launch of a new scheme to encourage more trees is to be welcomed. ‘For the purposes of the Woodland Carbon Code, we define woodland creation as the human-induced conversion to woodland of land that has not been under tree cover for at least 25 years. The woodland can be established by planting, direct seeding or natural regeneration.’  This is a positive move as it allows more natural woodlands to be created, rather than restricting funding to conventional planting schemes.

How to make a veganic no dig garden

How to grow using no dig methods veganically, also known as “stock free”, without animal manures or other animal derived inputs.

The Vegan Organic Network asked me to write article about plant based no dig gardening for their magazine Growing Green International. I was delighted to do so.

Of course all healthy gardens have animals and wild creatures as part of the whole ecosystem – that’s something we no dig gardeners whatever our composts actively encourage. This way of growing is not about excluding animals or soil life, but not using manures from farming and products such as fish, blood and bone. Obviously all healthy soils and composts have animal remains and poo in them, whether it is worm poo or the poo from a passing hedgehog.

Climate change: ‘Clear and unequivocal’ emergency, say scientists

A global group of around 11,000 scientists have endorsed research that says the world is facing a climate emergency.

The study, based on 40 years of data on a range of measures, says governments are failing to address the crisis.

Without deep and lasting changes, the world is facing "untold human suffering" the study says.

The researchers say they have a moral obligation to warn of the scale of the threat.

The Kindling Trust-buying a Farm

We are actively looking for land to make our farm a reality and are growing our membership to get more of you involved in making this happen!

Can you help us find our farm? We’re on the lookout for up to 200 acres with buildings, within 50 miles of Manchester. Help us get the word out and contact helen@kindling.org.uk if you know of somewhere that fits the bill!

Our plan is to find suitable land over the next twelve months or so. In the Spring of 2020 we will launch our community shares campaign to raise enough for a deposit to secure the land when we find it (this will last around 3 months). As soon as we find our Farm, we will run a larger scale share offer aiming for a target of £500,000. This will enable us to secure a longer term loan to buy the farm, and start work to turn the land into an exemplar organic agroforestry farm.

 Agriculture Fairness Alliance

Agriculture Fairness Alliance is dedicated to bringing fairness back to our food system.

It can be discouraging when we vegans find out that our veganism, and our activism, is being undermined by a rigged system. It's disheartening to know that with the explosive growth of veganism, more animals are being exploited and killed than ever before. Billions of our tax payer dollars are given to Big Animal Agriculture every year in the form of subsidies and bailouts. This creates a mass surplus of meat and dairy.

AFA has some BIG NEWS! AFA is taking a page from the Big Animal Ag playbook and hiring our own vegan-backed lobbying army in D.C. Getting legislation passed, with the help of lobbyists, is a critical step in making necessary changes to our system.
