SHDP Newsletter 2019 Winter edition
Greetings everyone, hope you are enjoying winter so far!
Winter months are typically the most productive months for research....a few items on my research « to do list »
  • Scanning documents to reduce paper
  • Learn about DNA & genealogy
  • Search newspaper websites
  • Research land records and deeds to learn more about transactions and the people involved
  • Find a few more wills of Hector descendants

And continue to reach descendants through the Facebook page

Do you have a photo or information you'd like to see included in the next newsletter?
Please send it to info@shiphectordescendants.ca
Thank you
Welcome to all new subscribers of the newsletter!

Something new this month, I have created a short survey that I hope you will complete to provide the project your input on a few topics which will help with project planning.
Just a few questions.....

Please click here to access the survey

I will provide a link to the survey on the Facebook page as well, please only complete once :)
The 2023 planning group met with the St Andrews Society of Pictou County and their Executive has committed to lead the planning for the 250th milestone celebrations. The planning will need to include many stakeholders. Various committees and many volunteers will be needed to make it a success!
SHDP will be represented in the planning.

The St Andrews Society of Pictou County was formed in 1921 to plan the 150th celebrations in 1923.

From a Ship Hector Descendant planning perspective I think it would be fantastic to have family reunions of various passenger groups to bring people together for some Nova Scotia hospitality!

Want to organize a family union for your Ship Hector ancestor(s)?
I will help you connect with cousins!

Send me your ideas! info@shiphectordescendants.ca

In 2018, the project was contacted by a Scottish writer who wanted to share an article she had written about the Hector.  The article by Anne-Marie Paterson was recently published in the Beauly News, a link to the article can be found HERE  or by clicking on the banner below:
DID YOU KNOW?  On the MCCULLOCH GENEALOGY CENTRE website, there is a section called "HAGGIS" (which is an acronym for Hector Archiving Gateway & Genealogical Indexing System), in short, a very large repository of online documents, photos, wills, maps, school & church records and other items that have been scanned by staff at the McCulloch Centre Archives.  You can search by name, location or subject and you will get multiple results.  Each document and item on HAGGIS is "tagged".  There is currently not an index, however, the tags will identify documents that meet your search criteria.

The Nova Scotia Archives has a number of historical newspapers online, including the Eastern Chronicle of New Glasgow for your research pleasure.  You may find an obituary, estate sale notice or some other interesting information about your ancestor.  Or perhaps you want to learn more about the current events of the time.  Worth a look!
Some of you may recall nearly two years ago the BBC released a documentary called "The Hector Canada' Mayflower", a 50 minute documentary about the Hector story.  It was originally broadcast on BBC Two, June 28, 2017.  Last fall it was made available on Canadian TV on the Documentary channel.  I have not heard that it is available in the United States yet.  Here is a link to a sample of the story on YouTube
You may also find it shown on the History network
(if you have that channel in your TV package), check your program guide.
It was a very well done documentary, if I find a link, I will share it.
