SHDP Newsletter Spring 2018 edition
Info of interest .....
WELCOME to the second edition of the Ship Hector Descendants Project (SHDP) newsletter. There are now over 200 subscribers to this newsletter which is fantastic. Thanks for your continued interest in the project.

This newsletter is intended to keep you up to date on the progress of the project and provide an opportunity for descendants to connect with each other.

Last issue I wrote about the idea of Connecting Cousins!  On a few occasions in the past year I have been able to put cousins in contact with each other, that is, descendants of the same ancestor(s).  If you'd like to connect with cousins, let me know and I can add your info in the next newsletter.  (This is the non-DNA way to meet cousins you never knew you had.)

A descendant of Hugh (weaver) Fraser and Sophia McPherson is interested in connecting with other descendants.  Ann Stevens has been writing a fictional historical book re Hugh for some time now and is looking to connect with other Fraser descendants.  Ann can be reached at annstevens21@hotmail.com

Also a writer from Scotland is looking to connect with people whose ancestors came from Beauly, Scotland for a future magazine article.  She recently posted a note on the Facebook page, which is her preferred means to connect.  If you are not on FB, I can provide her email.

Do you have a photo or information you'd like to see included in the next newsletter?
Please send it to info@shiphectordescendants.ca
Thank you

The Hector: Canada’s Mayflower

The CBC Documentary Channel aired the documentary that was produced by the BBC in the fall of 2016 earlier this year. This channel is not available to everyone so it is hoped that the show will be made available either on YouTube or the History Channel. If there is any news on this I will post an update.  It was very well done and featured the stories of several descendants.

2023 - CELEBRATING 250 YEARS OF THE LANDING OF THE SHIP HECTOR IN PICTOU, NS

In January 2018, a small group of Pictou County enthusiastic residents met to begin a discussion on what could/should be planned to celebrate this amazing milestone. We had a very good discussion and our first step was to develop a vision and mission for the 2023 project. Its important to build a good foundation as we look forward to future plans. Committees and working groups will be formed once the basics are in place. We hope to plan a variety of celebration events, featuring Scottish culture, and something for everyone.  Stay tuned for more info as plans evolve.

YOUR FAMILY TREE
Alot of you who are “confirmed” descendants of a Ship Hector passenger know how challenging it was to figure out who your ancestors are. You might have been fortunate to have a relative complete your family tree or acquired the family bible that had the details nicely mapped out.  Or maybe you are still struggling with that brick wall because the record doesn't exist. Some ancestors seemed to avoid being in the record books altogether. There are still many puzzles yet to be solved re the pioneer families and their descendants.

Would love to hear how you are connected to a Hector passenger. Please send an email to hectorroots1773@gmail.com outlining your direct ancestral line back to a passenger or who you believe it might be. Dates, location in Pictou County and spouses names are helpful.   Your info might solve a puzzle for another "unconfirmed" descendant.
Thank you for your assistance!
