The Town of Pictou is taking the lead on organizing and promoting events for Ship Hector 2023 celebrations.
Visit their website
http://www.pictou2023.com to view the event calendar and learn more about what's planned throughout the year.

The Town of Pictou will be celebrating 150 years as a Town, and of course, September 15, 2023 marks the 250th anniversary of the landing of the Ship Hector, a very important milestone for passenger descendants and those who are passionate about Pictou County history.

A WEBSITE IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION FOR THIS GENEALOGY AND LOCAL HISTORY CONFERENCE.  The website will provide a full description of all sessions and speakers and enable online registration. It will go "live" once speakers are confirmed.  More details will be in the next newsletter and an update will be posted on the project website.

This musical will be one of the highlights of 2023 celebrations.  Dates, times and venue are currently being coordinated.  At least two shows are planned.  Local talent will present this amazing musical about the Ship Hector journey.
You won't want to miss it!

This cemetery tour is hosted by the Alma Cemetery trustees.  The cemetery is located on Daisy Lane, just off Highway 4 in Alma, Pictou County.
It is the final resting place of 9 or 10 Hector passengers.
Hope you can join us!

A poem by Jean MacKay Fahrni (1919-2019)

HIGHLANDERS OF THE HECTOR
In 1773 they came,
Those Gaelic-speaking Highland men.
Mere laddies, most, when the Bonnie Prince at Culloden
Lost his chance to mount the Scottish throne
All scorned the laws which then proscribed beloved pipes,
Their plaids, their mountain tongue and sgian dubh; as well
The whiskey stills; so, to Cumberland, they all, in pride
Refused to bow. They listened, though, when came the call:
 "To freedom!" and eagerly replied.

New farms were promised, and a year’s provisions, in trade
For lands which they were quitting. Tools of their trades
Must they provide; and food for a very long crossing.
MacKays, Monroes, MacKenzies, and Frasers- fifty-seven men,
With wives and infants; one hundred and forty-nine were squeezed
Into the hold of a rotting Hector, where but forty should have been.
Tattered veteran of the smuggling trade, from Greenock,
Then Loch Broom she sailed, on the first day of July.

The skirling pipes of Will MacKay made brave
Their sad and sinking hearts, when bodies of dead bairns
Were tipped into the sea. Yet, storm and pestilence
Most survived; and finally, with jubilance arrived.
The men then donned full Highland dress to wade, and be
Piped ashore in Pictou, on the fifteenth of September.
Neither food nor shelter did they find; just endless
Stretches of towering pine, and bitter disappointment.

Their Scottish brogue none understood; yet when the Migmac
Became friends, they taught the strange new stubborn men
To net a fish, call a moose, fell a tree, and build a shelter.

Then stay alive. From tall pines straight spars were hewn
For Britain's sailing ships; both kirk and school were built,
And within one hundred years from that small community
There sprang this country's largest, learne’d band of youth;
Who spread their teachings across the land; and join these shores.

Isabel Roberta "Jean" MacKay Fahrni was a daughter of Rev Robert Grant MacKay & Jean McAleese;
a descendant of Hector passenger Donald MacKay (1750-1826)

Hurricane Fiona wreaked havoc on the Pictou Lodge in September 2022.  Repairs are underway to the accommodations and grounds, and the "Descendants and Friends" banquet will proceed on September 15, 2023 in the Northumberland room.
Many of you have already indicated you want to reserve tickets in advance. Once a few more details are confirmed to determine the ticket price, they will go on sale on the project website.
Want to ensure you get a ticket? Let me know how many you will need and I'll add your name to the list....... info@shiphectordescendants.ca
Thanks

We'd like to host an informal "Show & Tell" event that would enable you to share your photos, stories, artefacts, anything related to the Ship Hector and passenger descendants.  We need your participation for this to happen!  Participants would have approximately 15 minutes to speak about their "Show and Tell" item.  The event would occur the week leading up to September 15th.  Want to participate? Get in touch at info@shiphectordescendants.ca

As previously reported, John Ashton & I are compiling a book of profiles and stories of "Distinguished Descendants".  Some of these profiles have appeared in these newsletters, on the website blog, on Facebook, and in the News and Advocate newspapers.  We don't have a cover page to show you yet, as we are busy researching and writing more profiles.  We have over 100 completed so far!  We will have full page profiles of distinguished men and women, an Honourable Mention section for 30+ descendants, and a "TOP 10" section which showcases, who we think are the most successful descendants we know.
Books will be on sale in September at a book launch and available locally and online.
Stay tuned!
COUSIN CONNECT!  Coming together for celebrations in Pictou in September 2023 will be a wonderful opportunity for Ship Hector passenger descendants to meet cousins, likely for the first time.  This cousin chart from familysearch.org helps us figure out how we are connected to our cousins.
Some of our relationships may be even more distant than this chart, for 5th, 6th or 7th cousins.
In September, we would like to provide meaningful ways for cousins to connect and spend a little time together.
How would you like to meet your cousin(s)?
And how can we best help you connect?
