Welcome

I must say that I am a bit concerned that a number of companies who must appoint a DPO have not done so yet. Is the GDPR overwhelming? Oh yes it is but it is important that at least companies first of all understand if they need a DPO and if not who will take the lead on this. This law is burdensome and needs someone who is dedicated to deal with the various tasks it entails.

In view of this we have created a course specifically to assist DPO’s or those individuals who are taking the lead on this. Our first course was a success so we decided to organise a 2nd course which will start in the next few weeks. I must thank all the lawyers who have made this course become a reality. Thank you goes to Dr. Paul Gonzi, Dr. Thomas Bugeja and Dr. Antonio Ghio from Fenech and Fenech Advocates as well as Dr. Christine Calleja, Dr. Claude Micallef Grimaud and Dr. Warren Ciantar from Mamo TCV Advocates and Dr. Terence Cassar from Camilleri Preziosi Advocates. It is always a great pleasure to work with colleagues and despite the topic being tedious they have all kept the participants intrigued and I am sure they will do the same for the upcoming course.

I must admit I am keen on the upcoming course Becoming an Assertive Communicator. I know for sure that this one day course will be a great tool to help us all become better communicators. As you can see we try our best to keep creating courses/events which we believe will interest you and are essential. However we are all ears for any new ideas - do let us know!

Keep in touch and hope to see you all soon...any questions give us a buzz...Angelito and I are always happy to help.

Labour Law Reforms - keep an eye!

On the 1st of May Minister Dalli said that at the centre of labour law reforms is the strengthening of the work-life balance. Among the reforms is the requirement for employers to establish a clear policy which favours family life. Furthermore employers will have to provide detailed pay slips, presenting the normal hours worked, overtime, hours worked on Sundays and public holidays, leave and sick leave.

When it comes to the transfer of businesses, new laws shall stipulate that work conditions for employees cannot just be unilaterally changed, providing stability.

We are keeping track of these reforms  and we shall keep you posted.

New Law for the Gaming Industry

As you may be aware Malta’s Parliament has just approved new provisions which shall be added to its national Gaming Act. This Act shall strengthen the powers of  the Maltese Gaming Authority. Hence the Authority will have powers to enforce industry compliance, standards and regulatory guidelines on gambling/betting stakeholders. This  will be  in line with concurrent developments relating to anti-money laundering and combating the funding of terrorism.  It will also focus on improving player protection standards.
