SMA Women in Leadership

By Donna Kirby, Pensacola Blue Wahoos

“Hey, Donna … guess what?!  You’re the new chair of the Women in Leadership committee …” former chair Nicole Andrews casually announced to/at me in fly-by fashion while a group of us were there enjoying refreshments at Margaritaville’s JWB Steakhouse bar.
I remember thinking, “What just happened?”  I’d been bestowed with a title that, #1, I didn’t know was up for grabs and, #2, I didn’t even know I was in the running for!  This was a lot less “pomp and circumstance-y” than I’d imagined something like this might be, but hey – I’m in minor league baseball where you become well-versed at rolling with the punches, going with the flow, etc. … so I did!

I replied with a hearty-yet-bewildered, “Thanks?!  What does that mean?”  Nicole said, “We’ll talk later, but you’re the perfect gal for the job.”

“Perfect” might be a stretch, but I can tell you one thing – I was instantly pumped!  In fact, I imagine that the excitement I felt upon learning about my new endeavor with the SMA could be equated to how an American Idol contestant feels when they hear Lionel, Katy and Luke say, “You’re going to Hollywood” and then hand the contestant a golden ticket.  Only, this time, I was already in Hollywood Beach, and instead of a golden ticket, someone handed me another beer refreshment.  It was five o’clock somewhere!

… and, oh how much I’ve learned since those moments early in my young SMA WIL career! …
So, what is the SMA’s Women in Leadership group?  Simple:  We have a working mission that is as follows:

“To mentor, foster, develop and promote women leaders throughout the sports industry in all capacities and at all levels.”

“Since we moved into the new Busch Stadium in 2006, our field lighting has received high marks in MLB evaluations,” said Joe Abernathy, Vice President of Facility Planning. “However, with the recent advances in LED lighting technology we now have an opportunity to further improve the quality of our field lights and reduce our operating and maintenance cost.”
