End of Season Rally, <<First Name>>

Hello all. We’re now rapidly approaching the end of the season, with only a few more events left to go. The evenings are getting shorter — that’s very noticable now! — but the sun is still shining and (mostly) warm during the day. Great sailing is still to be had!

We still have space on a couple of events — see below — so if you’re interested let me know asap.

Roger Shorter

Firstly, some sad news passed on by a couple of club members:

Roger Shorter, who for many years was secretary of the Lloyds Bank Sailing Club, died on the 11th August. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and died after a short period of a week or two at home receiving palliative care.

If you would like to send your condolances to his family, please let me know and I will either pass them on for you, or forward you some contact details. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

The last two events with some space left, plus a social event in Edinburgh:

Edinburgh Social, 16 September

Twelve Dark Horse Sailing Club members will be on two canal boats for 10 days in September, travelling from Falkirk on the Forth and Clyde Canal. They will probably be in Edinburgh Sunday 15th September but definitely will be in Edinburgh the evening of Monday 16th September. They would love to catch up with any Dark Horse Sailing Club members that live in or may be visiting the area and would like to invite you on board on Monday evening for drinks and nibbles.

Please text Angela Hunter if you interested in coming along on 07515 421492 and she will text you on the day with details of where the boats are moored and the time for the event, which will either be at 6pm before their evening meal or 8pm after their evening meal.

Solent Cruise, 4-6 October

This is one of the club’s regular events: a casual cruise around the Solent in early October. No racing. No formalities. Just simple, late-season sailing. Being later in the season, the published fee range is £130 - £200 so superb value, especially if we get the full eight berths occupied.

This is a confirmed event, with a Skipper, Mate and 3 more crew booked onto Gull (Beneteau Oceanis 423) from Hamble Point Yacht Charter. Please contact me asap if you would like to join them.

End of Season Rally, 4-6 October

The End of Season Rally is a great opportunity to catch up with lots of club members. We have one boat booked already and I’m hoping to get enough bookings for another. The semi-formal Saturday evening dinner (included in the sailing fee) is a great social event: venue suggestions are welcome!

Those who can’t come along to the End of Season Rally itself are welcome to join everyone for dinner on the Saturday evening (but you need to book to ensure a place).

As with the Solent Cruise above, being an event near the end of the season this event affords great charter rates from Fairview, the published fee range being £160 - £210. This fee includes the Saturday evening dinner (£40 for those only attending the dinner).

Contact me now to book or if you have any questions.

Quick RNLI Fundraiser

With only three bids entered for the Gill Coast Jacket and Trousers, the winning bidder has ended up with very much a bargain! Both jacket and trousers are going to Paul Hill (or possibly his partner!), for the total of just £65. Not bad for kit with an RRP of around £300!

All the money will be going to the club’s charity of choice, the RNLI.

Southampton Boat Show, 13-22 September

There’s a discounted ticket offer for Dark Horse Sailing Club members: buy between 1 and 5 tickets at £13.50 each, and get a FREE ticket with each purchased ticket!

Membership Posters

As always, we're keen to attract new members. A great way to help with this is through advertising the club in your place of work or local sports or sailing club.

Feel free to print the posters yourself (available for download from the website) or drop me an email and I'll send some in the post.

That’s it for now. Please check out this year’s programme and email me if you have any questions. As always, when booking please let me know the role you’d like on the boat: skipper, mate or crew. Don’t forget to check the latest news on the DHSC Facebook page too!

Kind regards,

Simon Jackson
