Welcome to the August edition of Southern News with details of events & training sessions, news & announcements.
There are exciting times ahead with our new committee getting stuck into things and our new 2018-19 membership year about to start on 1 October.
All the hard work was more than worth it as the sun shone, over 1000 people turned up and we put on an awesome event at the Great Southern!
The races were run & won. Paul Mulholland made it 3 wins from 3 with a 1 hour 14 minute course record in the half marathon and it was a good day for his family as son, Cael, won the 10K race too. We had Sharks on the podium with Sarah taking 2nd place in the 10K and Luke finishing 3rd in the half.
Amazing to see so many Sharks out on the course, running some impressive times.

Overall, there were 568 finishers across the Half Marathon & 10K, and 80 kids in the beach race.
Thanks to all of our volunteers - especially to Mick, Dominique and Ali for their hard work over the weekend. And to Bec for those amazing bib & medal designs.
And how cool is our Sonya the Shark?
People's Choice Community Lottery
We hope to raise over $2000 through ticket sales so if you haven't had any books to sell or want a couple more please see Jason or Matt.
Bart, our new Sponsorship Officer is doing a top job getting local businesses to support us with financial donations and good deals for our members. Please support our sponsors wherever you can and be sure to let them know that Southern Athletic Club sent you.
A message from Bart:
"Greetings Sharks and Sharkettes, it's your not so humble commissar of sponsorship here requesting your assistance.
It has been my experience that cold calling businesses for money is not an effective strategy so I am hoping to build up a database of local business owners that our membership has in their sphere of influence that I may contact. Owner/operator enterprises are the most effective to contact as you don't need to deal with national head offices or HR departments. Do you know of any businesses you could ask if they would be interested in becoming a supporter, developing a relationship with Southern Athletic Club and seeing how we could help benefit their business?
If you have had a conversation and they have shown interest please pass the details on to any of our committee members or email firstname.lastname@example.org and let them know we will be in contact for a chat.
I would also like to take expressions of interest for a fundraising sub-committee of members or their parents. We would meet about once every eight weeks after a Friday run to discuss generating income for the club over a meal at one of our sponsors' venues.
Regards and take care, yours faithfully, 3:55:39"

The Keg and Barrel - Steakhouse Bar & Grill invites you to dine with us and enjoy our rustic & raw setting with our meaty menu of Steaks, Burgers and Ribs (& veggie options too) with plenty of craft beers and local wines on offer.
Our newly qualified coaches Sarah, Ben, Neil and Rob all successfully passed their Level 1 Recreational Run Leader accreditation in July. We look forward to them bringing some fresh ideas back to the club. Timing couldn't be better as Matt is about to go overseas for a couple of weeks, so it's over to you guys to put our runners through their paces at Wednesday track sessions and Friday Night Run Club.
Knox Park - Quick Update
In June the City of Onkaparinga undertook community consultation seeking feedback from local residents about Knox Park being used for athletics and other sports.
We campaigned, we leafleted and we knocked doors to influence the outcome.
At a recent meeting we were told that over 200 responses had been received and that only 11 had expressed any concerns - mostly around increased traffic. This still has to go to Council to make a decision, but it looks likely we will get the result we want.
We are continuing to work with Council staff on a feasibility report that will be tabled at the Council meeting on 11 September where we hope that a motion will be passed to change the Community Land Management Plan for Knox Park to allow sports and to give Southern Athletic Club land owner consent to develop training facilities on Knox Park.
In the meantime we are also busy preparing our funding strategy and grant applications to finance the works needed to bring the ground up to scratch.
