Welcome to the June edition of Southern News with details of events & training sessions, news & announcements.
Annual Award Winners
We hope that everyone who made it along to our presentation day had a good afternoon. I think the Cartoon Guy was a big hit!
A huge congratulations to our annual award winners for 2017-18:
Track and Field Athlete of the Year - Bradley Bruniges
Pro Runner of the Year - Harrison Evans
Recreational Runner of the Year - Glen Cuttance
Club Marathon Champion - Mick Atherton
John Russell Memorial Award for Club Person of the Year - Matt Evans
President's Award - Macey Coghlan
Congratulations - Greg Peterson OAM
An even bigger congratulations goes out to Greg Peterson who was awarded an Order of Australia medal for his incredible achievements and dedication to athletics.
Greg has been involved in athletics, particularly Little Athletics, for more than 25 years. He is affiliated to Southern Athletic Club as one of our officials and his parents, Colleen and Trevor, were founding members of the club in 1989.
Thank you so much Greg for all that you do for athletics to allow so many of us to enjoy the sport. It is fantastic to see you receive this recognition and is so truly deserved. Keep on doing it!
Around the Tracks
Track & Field season seems a distant memory, but Southern athletes have been busy on the roads and trails over the past month.
21 Sharks made the trip across to the Great Ocean Road Running Festival in May.
Grace & Jack kicked us off with big smiles in the kids race and there were sub-60s for Jason & Ryan in the 14K in the sun on Saturday afternoon. Half marathon PBs for Glen, Sonya & Amanda with a glorious debut for Jackie. Respectable times for Sarah, Mick, Jarod & Leigh - all returning from injury.
In the marathon Annette smashed a PB that was only seconds the wrong side of 4 hours, Keira debuted with a 4:23 and the indestructible Bec had another strong run. Scott rolled an ankle on Friday which took it's toll in the second half of his debut marathon, but he battled on to finish and we know there will be better days ahead for him.
Mathew walked his way to 10th in the under 18s 5K at the Lake Burley Griffin Walking Carnival in Canberra in 27:54.
I reckon there are plenty of runners who would be happy with a sub-28 5K! Rob & Kashie ran in the Adelaide Harriers' Queens Birthday Turkey Handicap, ably supported by Leigh, Mandy & Matt.
Kashie took out 4th place by finishing just 2.84 seconds over his predicted 5K time.
The SA School Cross Country Champs were held at Oakbank last week, in what is one of the best days of racing on the winter calendar - much better fun than going to school!
Another impressive result for Angus taking the win in the 13 years+ multiclass race by both time and percentage. There was a big improvement for Sadie, finishing 8th in the 13 yo girls race, with other top 20 finishes from James and Gracie. We were also represented by Zayden, Ella, Talia and Phoenix.
Hope you all enjoyed your racing & sorry if I missed anyone from the results. We had 4 Sharks at the Cleland 50 - a grueling, hilly 52K trail race. This was Ben and Adam's welcome to the ultra-marathon distance, whilst Bec and Mandy added another ultra finish to their long lists of achievements. Click Here to read Ben's account of the day.
We love to hear about your running and walking achievements - be sure to hit us up with photos and your race reports on Facebook.
We Need Your Help on 15 July!
We are closing in on 500 entries to the Great Southern Half Marathon & 10K - more than double the number of runners we had last year. This event is run 100% by Southern Athletic Club and all profits will go towards the costs of new equipment and facilities at Knox Park, for the benefit of all members.
Please keep 15 July free to come along and help (even if just for an hour or two). We need around 40 volunteers on the day to help with registrations, course marshaling, water stations, photography and managing the finish line area. Let us know if you and your family or friends will be there to make the day a big success for the club.
You can also help by spreading the word and getting more runners to enter - tell your running friends and share the event on Facebook.
Race entry is FREE to all club members - we want to see a sea of Southerns singlets.
Ask Matt if you need the free entry code.
Juniors are invited to run the 10K if they have the endurance
or there will be a 1500m beach race.
Thank you to our returning & new committee members for 2018-19.
Please note that the committee is here to guide the club forwards, not do all of the work.
Everyone has a role to play in the growth and success of Southern Athletic Club, so don't be shy to come forward with ideas, questions or suggestions and be prepared to roll your sleeves up and help out when it is needed.
President - Matt Evans
Vice President - Jason Stevens
Secretary/Uniforms - Dominique Edwards
Treasurer - Rowena Glaubitz
Sponsorship - Bart Baczyk

Knox Park Community Consultation
The City of Onkaparinga is in a consultation period with the local community around Knox Park, seeking their views on allowing it to be used for organised sports. We did our own leaflet drop to 500 house on 1 June and followed it up with a Saturday morning door knock. Thanks to the Southerns crew who helped with this - we collected more than 50 feedback forms which have been passed on to the City of Onkaparinga council, and many more residents told us they had already returned forms or submitted their feedback online supporting the re-classification of Knox Park
We were sung to, we were told how to cook the best roast potatoes and we had some great conversations. It always re-energises us to hear how the locals too would love to see Knox Park being used for athletics and other sports.
In parallel to this, we have been gathering quotes for the initial work that needs to be done and revising the feasibility study. The elected City of Onkaparinga Councilors are firmly behind our proposal and the matter will go before them again at their September meeting where we are confident that we will get the go ahead to bring athletics to Knox Park.
People's Choice Community Lottery
We are lucky to have been allocated 100 ticket books for the People's Choice Community Lottery again this year. If everyone can sell a book or two to family, friends and work colleagues we will raise more than $2000 for the club.
