Knox Park Update
What a fantastic turn out for our community meeting last Saturday, with about 100 listening to our speakers while another 25 trained on the track! We had 6 Onkaparinga councilors (very rare to have so many attend) & an apology from the mayor who only did not attend due to ill health. We had our lovely MP and the opposition candidate, an Olympian, our friends from Southern Running Group, local residents, a couple of dogs and (the most important guests of all) you - our awesome members and families. Thanks for turning up in force and making this a success. We clearly showed the potential for bringing athletics to Knox Park, our numbers & enthusiasm and the universal support we have for our plans.
We were in the Messenger twice in two weeks, with the cover story leading into the meeting and a shorter write up this week - all publicity is great publicity.
Deputation - 17 October
We will be presenting a deputation to the Onkaparinga council meeting this coming Tuesday evening, 17 October, asking our elected councilors to grant us permission to make some low-impact upgrades to the grounds at Knox Park to bring it up to standard for us to start training there.
Council meetings are open to the public and it would be great to have members come along to support. Apparently the councilors are much more likely to agree to our deputation if we have supporters there in person, so you will make a difference by being there. Keep an eye on Facebook for details.
Fund My Neighbourhood Voting Opens 18 October
The $90,000 grant application we have submitted to build a toilet on Knox Park will go to a public vote to determine whether we are successful so get ready to drum up interest with your friends, family and neighbours to vote and secure this money.
Return Your Petitions
Please return your petitions to Matt or to your coach as soon as you can.
Athletics SA season started last weekend and continues on Saturday with the first Interclub of the summer. The following weekend is the State All Schools - entries close earlier than usual at 9am on 16 October, so don't miss out.
The first SA Athletic League of the season is at Brighton on Friday night.
We want to see heaps of of Southern athletes enjoying competition and time with your club mates this summer. Remember: you are not purely a track & field athlete or just a pro runner - you are a Shark and we encourage you to compete here, there and everywhere. And let's have plenty of photos showing Sharks in action this season!
