Welcome to Southern News with details of events & training sessions, news & announcements. It's been a while since our last edition of Southern News - we've been very busy working on other priorities - but we're back now.
The North-South Challenge
I'm proud to announce that Southern Athletic Club took out the inaugural North-South Challenge at the Salisbury Half Marathon last month. And we didn't just win it - WE DOMINATED! Congratulations to the 20 recreational runners who made the trip north and ran their hearts out for the club.
Let's make sure we keep the trophy at the Great Southern Half Marathon in July. We are planning for a future challenge to include our track & field and pro running stars too.
The Club is Booming
Southern Athletic Club membership has seen a huge growth in recent years and is now at 114 - thanks for being part of it! We have smashed through our initial target of 100 members. Next stop will be 126 - double our membership from 2016-17.
So much of our growth comes through word of mouth, so if you know anyone who might want to try athletics or be part of a friendly recreational running group let them know where they can find us.
Knox Park Update
An incredible amount of work has been going on in the background to secure Knox Park as the new home for Southern Athletic Club. The elected City of Onkaparinga Councilors are firmly behind our proposal and the matter will go before them again at their September meeting for a decision. In the meantime, we are gathering quotes for the work that needs to be done and revising the feasibility study.
One hurdle that still needs to be overcome is that Knox Park is not zoned for organised sport. The Council will be seeking feedback from local residents about changing this. We know that a majority of local residents want to see athletics come to Knox Park so it is important that the supporters let Onkaparinga know their views. We are planning on doing a letter box drop, door-knock and having another public meeting to influence this as much as we can.
We will be letting you know how you can help shortly, so please give your time where you can - we only have one shot at this!
We have also started a crowd funding project with the Australian Sports Foundation to raise a proportion of the funds we will need to get Knox Park ready for athletics. All donations over $2 are tax deductible so please share the link with your rich aunties and that millionaire businessman who lives next door ;)
We hope you can join us on Sunday 27 May from 4 - 6 pm at McLaren Football Club for our AGM and annual award presentations to celebrate the achievements of the past year.
Family members and supporters are very welcome.
We will keep the AGM brief and will elect our management committee for the coming year.
Track and Field Athlete of the Year
Pro Runner of the Year
Recreational Runner of the Year
Club Marathon Champion
John Russell Memorial Award for Club Person of the Year
Bring a plate of nibbles to share with your table, the bar will be open (no BYO) and we are planning some fun activities for the kids & the big kids.
2018-19 Committee Nominations
Our current management committee will be dissolved and a new one elected for 2018-19 at our AGM. As well as the executive positions (President, Vice President, Secretary & Treasurer), this year we are looking for nominations for the following specific committee roles to help take the club forward:
Junior Engagement Officer
Recreational Running Officer
Social Media Officer
General Committee Members
It is important that all groups within the club are represented. Please consider nominating if you have the skills and want to contribute to Southern Athletic Club's growth & development.
You can nominate in advance (please email Matt - firstname.lastname@example.org) or on the day. Talk to Matt if you would like to know what is involved in sitting on the committee or for further info about any of the roles.
The Great Southern Half Marathon
The Great Southern Half Marathon will be held on 15 July, starting and finishing at the Aldinga Bay Surf Life Saving Club. Last year's event was a huge hit and we are expecting to attract 400-500 runners to the 2018 race.
There will be a half marathon and 10K. Race entry is FREE to all club members. Ask Matt if you need the free entry code. Juniors are invited to run the 10K if they have the endurance or there will be a 1500m kids beach race.
The Great Southern Half Marathon is a key fund raiser for the club so please put your hand up when the call for volunteers comes out. Jobs will include directing runners, giving out water, photography, finish line supervision and presenting medals - nothing too taxing :)

People's Choice Community Lottery
We are lucky enough to be allocated 100 ticket books for the People's Choice Community Lottery again this year. If every member can sell just one book each that is $2,000 straight into the Knox Park development fund for everyone's benefit.
Did you know that you get 5% of the value of any sponsorships that you develop for the club to spend on club membership, competition fees or uniform? We are always looking for new opportunities so let us know if you have any businesses contacts who are keen to sponsor the club.
