Welcome to the November edition of Southern News with details of events & training sessions, news & announcements. We have already hit 170 members for the new 2018-19 year including 67 new athletes (yes, you are all athletes) so a special welcome to all of you.
As the club continues to grow we know that our communications are key to keeping everyone in the loop - there are way too many people just to tell you things when I see you anymore - and this is a fabulous challenge to have :) I hope that this newsletter gives you a good overview of the club and how we try to run things - I'll try to keep each of the sections brief & to the point. so you will read it all!
And we are not satisfied with 170 members. If you have not signed up yet, please register at http://southernac.org.au/membership2018/. Or refer a friend if you know someone who would like to try track & field or benefit from training with an awesome running group.
We are really looking forward to our best year yet!
You'll see the newsletter interspersed with details of some of our club sponsors - these businesses make a financial contribution to support our club, pay for equipment, subsidise events and keep membership costs to a minimum. Please use these businesses when you can and be sure to let them know that Southern Athletic Club sent you. If you know of a business that may like to partner with us, speak to Bart or Matt about the opportunities.
The Running Company
The home for runners of all ages and abilities for the southern area of SA.
"Anyone can buy runners. Not everyone buys the right runners."
Southern Athletic Club exists to support each and every member to enjoy athletics and reach their performance potential.
Our vision is to develop a sustainable, inclusive, community-based athletics club that promotes healthy, active lifestyles; supports its members to achieve their athletic goals; becomes the club of choice for athletes and coaches living in the south; and promotes athletics as the summer sport of choice alongside year-round road and trail running.
Our management committee for 2018-19 was elected at our AGM in May to guide the club forwards. Everyone has a role to play in the growth and success of Southern Athletic Club, so don't be shy to come forward with ideas, questions or suggestions and be prepared to roll your sleeves up and help out when it is needed.

Road & Trail Runners
The road & trail runners meet for steady runs every Friday evening. Interval & hill sessions are held on Mondays. Wednesday sessions are held at Reynella East College, alternating between interval sessions held on the the grass track and strength & conditioning sessions.
Coaching support is provided by Neil, Sarah, Mick and Matt. We get together at races across the SA, takeover local parkruns, have regular social dinners and arrange trips to races further afield (planing is underway for Pichi Richi Marathon in June 2019 and Berlin Marathon in September). We are also looking at how we can best support the growing number of triathletes in our ranks.
Join the Southern Runners Facebook group to access the training and events calendar and to keep up with other news. Feel free to use this group to post your photos, race reports, ask questions, arrange informal runs, etc.
$20 discount on initial assessments, or gap-free if you have private health cover.
Physio Alive will also be providing injury assessment clinics at training and
education sessions through the year.

The Southern Athletic Club Development Academy provides a fun, safe environment for event specific coaching of athletes aged 10 and above from local Little Athletics centres and for school athletes looking to try track and field for the first time or to prepare for their school and district athletics carnivals.
Training is held every Wednesday evening (all year round) from 4:30-6:00 at Reynella East College.
The Development Academy develops athletes' technique, performance and confidence to transition to competition at Athletics SA and SA Athletic League meets and our senior training squads.
Development Academy athletes and parents/caregivers should request to join the Southern Athletic Club Development Academy Facebook group for training & other news or to ask questions, e.g. if a session is going to be changed or cancelled due to weather conditions this is where we will post it.
The Keg and Barrel - Steakhouse Bar & Grill invites you to dine with us and enjoy our rustic & raw setting with our meaty menu of Steaks, Burgers and Ribs (& veggie options too) with plenty of craft beers and local wines on offer.
Under the guidance of head coach Jason Stevens, the track & field squad offers coaching to athletes competing locally at Athletics SA meets through to state team members at national level competitions. Coaching and competition support is provided by our team of experienced and accredited coaches across all event groups.
Training is held at Reynella East College on Monday & Wednesday evenings with additional sessions held at SA Athletics Stadium, Mile End on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

We may train in different groups, but remember that we are all part of ONE club! Get involved with our regular cross-club activities and feel free to head along to other training sessions to see what is happening or events to support your fellow Sharks.
Although they usually follow the Road & Trail Runners Friday night runs, all club members and families are welcome along to our social dinners. Get these dates in your diaries:
Once a month we target one of our local parkruns and flood the field with a sea of Sharks, taking over all of the volunteering positions once a quarter too - we love to see runners from across the club here (next up is Aldinga Beach parkrun on 17 November).
Our AGM and Annual Presentations take place in May every year. The club has definitely now out-grown the venue we have used for the past 2 years so it'll be exciting to put a new grand plan together for our 2019 celebrations!
"Many hands make light work!"
Get involved with our fundraising activities through the year, whether that's selling lottery tickets, helping out at a sausage sizzle or volunteering at the Great Southern Half Marathon. As with sponsorship, we all benefit as money from fundraising helps us keep the cost of training, uniform, membership and events to a minimum for everyone.
THE best Thai restaurant in Adelaide.
Amazing range of vegetarian & vegan options available.
Our blue/green and blue/pink competition singlets are now in stock in most sizes - catch Matt at training to grab one. We didn't get enough medium sizes and have sold out of both men's and women's mediums - sorry! We have placed another order that should be here by the end of November. Once these arrive they will be held in stock at The Running Company - South Adelaide to make it easier for everyone to get hold of them.
2018-19 Training Tops:
We ordered the first 100 tops guessing the sizes we would need & not expecting such a huge increase in our club registrations (but certainly a great problem to have). They should be here by end of this week and will be distributed in the order that people registered. We will then check sizes needed by everyone else and get the final batch ordered
Hoody Order: Hoodies should be here in the next couple of weeks - just in time for summer! Please transfer your payments to the club account if you haven't paid yet.
New Uniform Range:
Sub4 are in the process of designing a whole new range of gear for us based on the style of our existing navy/white polos and track jackets. The new range will include long & short sleeved T-shirts, shorts, track suits, polo shirts, spray jackets, tights, caps, buffs, sun sleeves and arm warmers.
Going forward, we will place orders from this range 3 or 4 times per year depending on what people want to buy at the time. This will save us having to tie up club funds in expensive stock. Keep your eye out for details soon as we have to place our first order by 15 November to guarantee delivery before Christmas.

Christies Beach parkrun
We have been working incredibly hard for the past 2 years to secure a new, centrally located home for Southern Athletic Club - to establish good quality athletics training facilities that will set us up for further growth and performance success into the future.
At their September meeting, Council passed a motion to change the classification of Knox Park, Morphett Vale to allow organised sports and gave Southern Athletic Club permission to develop athletics training facilities there as part of a multi-use district sports ground - two really significant steps forward!
We are now working on the funding strategy and grant applications to finance the works needed to bring the ground up to scratch. It may be another year before we complete the work and are on the park training but it is definitely happening.
