Performance of the Month
November's performance of the month was pretty easy to choose and is awarded to Angus Hincksman for setting the Australian T38 5000m open age group record in 18:26 - knocking over a minute off the previous record.
It's been a while since a Southern Athletic Club member set a national record so we are super proud of this one :)
At November's council meeting we took a significant step towards bringing athletics to Knox Park. Cr Heather Merritt spoke passionately on behalf of the club and with universal support from the chamber the City of Onkaparinga council passed a motion "That council officers, in conjunction with Southern Athletic Club, should develop a business case for an athletics facility on Knox Park and report back to Council in February 2018."
The council was also asked to commence the necessary activities to change the Community Land Management Plan to allow Knox Park to be used for organised sports.
We expect the business case to result in land owner permission being granted for the development of athletics training facilities on Knox Park which will allow us to apply for the necessary funding from state government.
Huge thanks go to Heather Merritt for her support and tabling the motion, to Katrine Hildyard MP for her guidance and encouragement, to the City of Onkaparinga Councillors for passing this important motion and to the Southern Athletic Club committee for their tireless work in getting us this far.
There's plenty of work still to go but we are getting there. And the struggle continues while Northern Districts AC are planning construction of a new state-of-the-art stadium and synthetic track - what a difference a council makes!
