Dear neighbor,

Construction continues on W Nickerson St between Etruria St and 3rd Ave W (shown in Zone A on map below). You may have noticed that work has ramped up along the corridor as crews continue to repair sections of the road in preparation for grinding and paving later this month.

Below is more information on what to expect for the final month of work in Zone A. Please note that paving is highly weather dependent and may be postponed.
What to expect as construction continues in Zone A
  • 24-hour parking restrictions: To avoid being towed, particularly during nighttime grinding and paving activities, please adhere to the “No Parking” signs on W Nickerson St. We’ll work to restore parking on weekends, where feasible and safe.
  • Crews continue repair of pavement on Nickerson St in Zone A. Crews will continue using excavators, vibratory rollers, pavers, and other equipment. This work may be noisy.
  • Traffic lanes will remain in their current configuration with 1 lane of traffic in each direction. During this time, you can expect temporary driveway access restrictions while crews repair the roadway. We will share more information as work progresses.
  • Crews are also  upgrading curb ramps on W Nickerson St
  • Bus stops will remain open and accessible.
  • Access to shops and offices on Nickerson St/W Nickerson St will remain open. Please continue to visit Nickerson businesses during construction!
  • Noise, dust, and vibration near construction zones; we’ll limit impacts as much as possible
Upcoming weekend and nighttime work
  • Saturday, October 14 (road repair): Crews will be working during the day this Saturday, October 14, to repair sections of the road under the trolley lines. This work will deactivate the trolley lines for Metro buses, however buses will continue their normal routes and schedule.
  • Friday, October 20 – Saturday, October 21 (grinding): Before paving in Zone A, crews need to grind off the top layer of asphalt and seal cracks. To minimize traffic impacts and complete work efficiently, we plan to grind the road in Zone A from 7 PM Friday October 20, to 11 AM Saturday, October 21. To perform this night work, the contractor obtained a noise variance permit from the Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections.
  • Friday, October 27 – Saturday, October 28 (paving): To minimize traffic impacts and complete work efficiently, the contractor is planning to pave the road in Zone A from 7 PM on Friday, October 27, through 11 AM Saturday, October 28. To perform this night work, the contractor obtained a noise variance permit from the Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections. This work is highly weather-dependent and may be postponed.
You can expect the following during the nighttime paving and grinding work:
  • Construction activity from 7 PM – 11 AM the following morning
  • 24-hour parking restrictions; please adhere to the “No Parking” signs to avoid being towed and provide crews sufficient space to complete work on time
  • Construction noise, dust, and vibration from paving and grinding activities
    • For grinding, expect to hear a “dull roar” as the machines move along Nickerson; machines will make a few passes through the corridor
    • For paving, expect equipment-related noise, such as from pavement rollers
  • After crews grind the roadway, pavement will be rough and drivers will be driving over steel plates on the roadway. As paving is weather dependent and Seattle is known for rainy falls, the road may be in this condition for longer than anticipated.
  • One lane of traffic in each direction during nighttime work
