Lancelin Foreshore Redevelopment
Set to Go Ahead

The redevelopment of the Lancelin Foreshore has been a long time coming. However, Council has now taken delivery of the proposed draft plans for this exciting project which will include:

  • Major upgrades to the existing car parking adjacent to Grace Darling Park and along Cunliffe St
  • A new adjoining boardwalk and gazebo
  • Disability access to gazebo
  • Provision of increased lawn area
  • Revegetation in the vicinity of Hopkins St
  • New footpaths throughout the area
  • Sand renourishment
  • Improved Hopkins St road surface and drainage

A copy of these plans is available for public viewing on the Shire’s website

These plans are essentially the same as previous designs created after public consultation in previous years. The design has undergone several revisions during the past 4 years (given coastal erosion concerns) but with Council’s decision last year to retain public access to Edward Island Point, the draft designs consequently reflect what was originally requested through public consultation.

The public was able to provide comments on these draft plans from 15-28 February.

Following the closure of the feedback period, the draft plans will be presented to Council at a Council Meeting for formal adoption and then tenders will be invited for the construction of the Lancelin Foreshore Redevelopment.

Annual Report & Annual Meeting of Electors

The Annual Report 2019/20 was officially adopted by Council at its Special Council Meeting in February 2021.

With the adoption, Council has consequently called for an Annual Meeting of Electors to be held. This will take place on Tuesday, 16 March 2021 at 5pm following Council’s Ordinary March Meeting. The venue will  be the Shire of Gingin Administration Centre, 7 Brockman St, Gingin. The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss the contents of the Annual Report 2019/20 and any other general business.

A copy of the Annual Report may be viewed on the Shire’s website
The Shire hopes that this year’s Annual Report portrays the sheer amount of hard work our Council and Shire staff have exerted over the last 12 months in our tireless attempt to serve our many community’s interests.

Outdoor Activity Space Works Well Underway

The Shire of Gingin has commenced construction of the Gingin Outdoor Activity Space (GOAS) as of 4 January 2021.

This exciting project (situated adjacent to the Granville Civic Centre) is a community based initiative and has been predominantly driven by the Gingin Outdoor Activity Space Project group (formerly Gingin Interactive Space Group), a community working group who came together to initiate and progress the development of a new outdoor activity space within the Gingin town site. The working group was independently formed in 2018 and is made up of several community members representing different demographics and/or interests in the community.

This project (formerly known as the Gingin Regional Playground) was instigated by the community given the aging and limited playground equipment in the Gingin town site. The original ‘Gingin Regional Playground’ project was to potentially relocate, renew and add to existing playground equipment for children. However, the project evolved over time given the need for an outdoor space that supported inclusion and engagement of all ages. The Working Group’s vision ‘is for a cohesive, accessible multigenerational outdoor recreational space within the centre of Gingin town.’

The Working Group has actively worked with the Shire at all stages of this project to ensure their vision is achieved. This has included independently undertaking fundraising activities and sourcing sponsorships ($50,000), obtaining in-kind works and contributions ($35,000) and securing $150,000 in partnership with the Gingin CRC through a successful Bendigo Bank (Gingin Community Bank Branch & Lancelin Branch) grant application. The Working Group also contributed to acquiring Federal funding with Hon. Christian Porter’s support by meeting with him and discussing the project, the community’s needs and the Working Group’s role. (Building Our Future - Australian Government)

The Working Group continues to drive this project together with the Shire. The official launch of the Gingin Outdoor Activity Space is expected to coincide with Gingin’s Sesquicentenary (150th Anniversary) which will take place on 9 October 2021.

Re-roofing of Granville Civic Centre

The re-roofing of the Granville Civic Centre has commenced and is progressing rapidly. The works are expected to conclude approximately by 10 March.

The reason these works are being undertaken is due to the deterioration of the roof to the point that a replacement has become necessary.

During this time the public are asked to please avoid the area and the Centre will not be available for public bookings.

Enquiries may be directed to the Shire's Assets department on (08) 9575 5100, option 7.

Public Notices

EXTENSION OF PROHIBITED BURNING PERIOD

Pursuant to Section 17 (7) of the Bush Fires Act 1954 the decision was made that the Prohibited Burning Period within the Shire of Gingin would be extended until midnight on Sunday, 14 March 2021.

Currently there is NO BURNING permitted for any reason. This includes open cooking or camp fires.

Despite a bit of rain recently, weather conditions have remained relatively warm this bush fire season and fuel loads are quite dry still. Consequently the decision was made to extend the Prohibited Burning Period an additional 14 days.

Community safety remains the number one priority for the Shire. The Red Gully and Wooroloo bush fires this summer are reminders not to be complacent. With ground conditions still very dry, the Shire's Bush Fire Control Officers felt the extension was warranted.

Further enquiries may be directed to the Shire of Gingin on (08) 9575 5100.
