Welcome to Community News - the Shire of Gingin's community e-newsletter

The Shire of Gingin would like to inform and support our communities to become inclusive, vibrant, and healthy, and provide information on available grants, local community and club events.

You are welcome to share this information onwards. 
Naidoc Week runs from 3 July to 10 July and is an opportunity to celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island People.
This year’s theme is ‘Get up! Stand Up! Show Up! You can learn more about the theme at
Koorunga CWA Yarning Circle 
On Friday 24 June, Koorunga CWA hosted a Yarning Circle at the Granville Civic Centre. Approximately 120 community members attended the event, including women, men and small children and it was a great opportunity to meet Yued Elder Margaret Drayton and hear the knowledge of our town and surrounding areas.

The event started with a Welcome to Country Smoking Ceremony and throughout the day Margaret shared her extensive knowledge of the Yued country, whilst guests painted and weaved their own stories. 

it was a beautiful day organised by Koorunga CWA and the Shire thanks them for providing this event to the community.

The Shire of Gingin is seeking nominations for three community members to join an Aged Housing & Care Service Provision Working Group.

Community representatives for this Working Group must be ratepayers or residents of the Shire of Gingin and have an interest and/or experience in the provision of housing and care services for aged persons.

Written submissions should include your name, address, and contact information, and a one-page statement detailing your experience/interest in aged housing and providing age care services.

Nominations should be made in writing and directed to the Chief Executive Officer either by post to the Shire of Gingin, PO Box 510, Gingin WA  6503 or by email to and be lodged by 12.00 noon on Monday 11 July 2022.

K's for R U OK? in July 
R U OK? is launching a virtual fitness challenge that runs over 31 days in July. It's not about how fast or far you can go, it's about connection, commitment and consistency. You choose the distance you’ll cover daily. You choose where, with who, and how you complete your K’s (run or jog, walk and talk, wheel or push).

Starting beginning of July, for 12-16 years. There’ll be 5 sessions spread out over the holidays. Places are limited but there are a few left. Please get in touch to hold a spot. Contact Karen Grant on 0429358927, or message the gym's Facebook page.

Are you a deaf or hard of hearing young person? 

Applications are open for Deaf Children Australia's 2022 Youth Grants, supporting young people aged between 15 and 23 to accomplish their personal goals. You can receive up to $2,500 in funding! Applications close 12 July 2022.

Healthy Sports Program

Sport clubs and associations can apply for funding of up to $4,000 to implement healthy eating initiatives, eg, promoting healthy snacks and drinks pre, during and post-game, and improving canteen/kiosk facilities to provide healthier options.

Drug Aware YCulture Regional
Are you aged 12-26 and living in regional WA? Do you want to develop your creative skills and gain experience by running an arts project in your community? Grants for arts projects are now available through the Drug Aware YCulture Regional! Applications close 30 November 2022.

Club Night Lights Program
This program aims to provide financial assistance to community groups and local governments to develop sports floodlighting infrastructure. It also aims to maintain or increase participation in sport and recreation with an emphasis on physical activity, through rational development of good quality, well-designed and well-utilised facilities. Applications close 30 September 2022.

Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF)
This program seeks to provide Western Australian Government financial assistance to community groups and local governments to develop basic infrastructure for sport and recreation. It aims to maintain or increase participation in sport and recreation, with an emphasis on physical activity, through development of sustainable, good quality, well-designed and well-utilized facilities. There are three types of grants available: Small Grants, Annual Grants and Forward Planning Grants. Applications close 30 September 2022.

Thank A Volunteer Day Grants Program
Grants of up to $2,000 are available for community organisations to host events or activities on Thank a Volunteer Day, which is held every year on 5 December. Applications close 28 July 2022.

Working together with their footy partners, St.George have $150,000 in funding available for local clubs– whether it’s support recovering from the floods, buying new equipment, facility improvements, establishing a new team or anything else – they can help your community grow and thrive through footy.

The Heart Foundation has up to ten $10,000 grants available for new, innovative projects that get more people moving in schools, universities or local community groups. The Active Australia Innovation Challenge strongly encourages  innovative projects that support people who do not meet Australia’s Physical Activity Guidelines, people at risk of chronic disease, and people living in communities with high levels of physical inactivity (including rural and remote regions). This includes people identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and people with culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

The Road Safety Community Grant Program supports the development and implementation of sustainable projects and one-off community activities that assist in promoting road safety across the state through the Road Trauma Trust Account (RTTA). Applications close 15 July 2022.

Space Explorers Program - Gingin Gravity Centre
The Space Explorers Program will run at 11am and 1.30pm on Thursday 7th & 14th July. Perfect for ages 5 and up (and with plenty to interest mums and dads) this program will teach kids all about our local solar system through interactive activities and teach them some of the skills it takes to become an astronaut! Booking your space is essential.

Rocket Making Program - Gingin Gravity Centre
The Rocket Making Program will run at 11am and 1.30pm on Wednesday 6th & 13th and Friday 8th & 15th July. Ideal for children aged 6-12 years this program will give them an introduction into age appropriate rocket science. They will start out the session by learning how to make straw rockets and then advancing onto bottle rockets. They will then have the opportunity to launch their rocket and see where it lands in the solar system! Booking your space is essential.
