Approximately 160 keen competitors met at Grace Darling Park on Sunday, 20 February for the 2022 Lancelin Triathlon. Morning weather conditions were close to perfect for this family-friendly event which attracted participants from the South-West, Metro, Mid-west and Wheatbelt regions from as young as 9 to 75 years of age.
The event offered both long and short courses consisting of an open ocean swim followed by cycle and run legs through Lancelin. Following an event briefing, long course competitors kicked off the triathlon with a 325m swim at the Cunliffe St beach area, then a 14km bike ride and a 3km run through town. Short course competitors then followed with a 125m swim, 6km cycle and a 1.5km run.
Keeping a watchful eye over the swimmers during the open water swim were Lancelin Volunteer Marine Rescue and West Coast Water Safety patrol boats and paddle board riders and a West Coast Heli Scene chopper. The event was also attended by Lancelin Police and St John Ambulance officers, as well as a team from Shalom House who helped Shire staff with marshalling support through town.

Are you prepared for a positive COVID-19 result & do you know where to get tested?
|
|
|
With the Omicron variant of COVID-19 now in WA, now is the time to make preparations for directions to isolate in the event of a positive COVID-19 result. The best thing you can do is know where to get tested and have a kit prepared in case you test positive.
COVID-19 TESTING LOCATIONS
If you or a family member starts to feel COVID-19 symptoms you should go to your nearest public emergency department for testing. For the Shire of Gingin there are a number of regional and metro locations where you can get tested in addition to many more across the Wheatbelt. See locations below.
REMEMBER - please make sure to call ahead to Wheatbelt testing sites.
COVID KIT
It’s important you’re prepared to manage COVID-19 with these essentials for your COVID-19 kit:
✔️ A thermometer
✔️ Pain relief
✔️ Your regular medications
✔️ Face masks, hand sanitiser and gloves
✔️ Stay-at-home activities to keep you entertained
If you need to isolate make sure you have:
✔️ Phone numbers for people you can call if you need help
✔️ A plan for who can look after your children, pets or people in your care if you have to go to hospital
✔️ A plan for how you’ll get food and essentials. If possible, arrange with a friend or family member who doesn’t live with you to shop for you and leave groceries at your door
✔️ A plan listing your health conditions and medications that may assist health care workers and doctors to assess your condition if you are required to go to hospital
To learn more about what you need to do to prepare visit the State Government's website.

Amnesty Period extended for Illegal Buildings
|
|
|
Last September the Shire offered an amnesty period to landowners with a building or structure on their property that had never received planning or building approval. This includes swimming pools and spas.
The amnesty provided a waiver for retrospective planning and building application fees and was scheduled to expire 31 January 2022.
We are pleased to report that the amnesty has been positively received and our Building Services team have received many enquiries. As a result, we are extending the amnesty to 30 June 2022.
If you are unsure if a structure or building is approved, you can request a copy of the plans of the structures on your property from the Building Services team. You can contact them directly (see below phone number) or complete an Application for Copy of Plans form available for download from our website. You can then either drop off or email your form to mail@gingin.wa.gov.au for processing (please note an administrative fee will apply).
Enquiries may be directed to the Building Services team on (08) 9575 5100, (option 5).

The boardwalk at Stephens Crescent in Guilderton has been temporarily closed after a recent inspection deemed it to be unsafe.
Repairs to the boardwalk will be undertaken in the new financial year as the repair of the boardwalk was not budgeted in the 2021/22 financial year. Staff in the meantime are currently undertaking a structural engineering report and will look to have plans developed for the repairs over the course of the remainder of this financial year.
The Shire thanks the public for their patience whilst these works are undertaken. We appreciate that the boardwalk is popular with many local walkers and we will endeavour to have it repaired and re-opened as soon as possible.
Enquiries may be directed to the Operations & Assets Department team on (08) 9575 5100, (option 7).
