Advent

Israel's strength and consolation,
hope of all the earth thou art;
dear desire of every nation,
joy of every longing heart.
*

ADVENT IS THE PRECIOUS SEASON in which the Church gathers our hearts in hope, in courage, in joy, and in love in a collective period of waiting.  We wait for Christmas, when we remember the moment in historical time when the God of heaven and earth took flesh in the human being, Jesus, and all the stars, we are told, danced for joy at the birth of that baby.  We wait also for the second and ultimate coming of Christ, when all the world will be redeemed and we shall see it, built upon the ruins of mankind’s false hopes.  Our longing for God and meaning becomes palpable in this liminal time.

JOIN US ON THE SECOND SUNDAY IN ADVENT, December 10 at 9:30 am for the Eucharist, prayer, hymns, and reflections on the Gospel of Mark and the beginning of the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Come, thou long expected Jesus,
born to set thy people free;
from our fears and sins release us,
let us find our rest in thee.

“Come, thou long-expected Jesus,” Hymn 66 in The Hymnal 1982, according to the use of The Episcopal Church (New York: Church Hymnal Corporation, 1985)
