New Mining Study

This session the legislature passed mining reform legislation.  I authored the legislation because we can balance protecting the environment while bringing good-paying, family supporting jobs to the North.  A good example is the Eagle Mine near Ishpeming, Michigan that was toured recently by the Oneida County Board of Supervisors.

This week, the Center for Research on the Wisconsin Economy (CROWE), based in the UW-Madison, issued a report on the financial impact of a mine in Oneida County.  In particular, I thought it was striking that the average mining job will pay nearly double the average job currently in Oneida County.  See the report here.

Florence Schools

On Friday, October 19, the School District of Florence County and the greater Florence County community dedicated the new middle/high school addition and renovation.  Following a successful referendum, construction began on the 75,000-square foot renovation and 11,000-square-foot addition in August 2017 and it was completed in August of 2018.

The additions to and complete renovation of the historic 1930s building included infrastructure upgrades for the entire middle/high school building; secure main entrances in both buildings; renovation and modernization of the building, including the creation of a distance learning classroom,  the addition of an elevator and other accessibility improvements, classroom updates and widened corridors; renovation of the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) area; middle school classroom addition; and a kitchen addition.  Miron Contruction Co., Inc. served as the construction manager on the project, and Bray Architects designed the new and improved spaces.

Drug Take Back

Tomorrow is the day! Bring your unneeded medications to a Drug Take Back Day collection site around the state.

Safely dispose of your unwanted or unused medications – especially opioids – on Saturday, October 27th. You can also dispose of medications at hundreds of locations throughout the state all year round. To find the Drug Take Back location nearest you, click here.

For more information about what you can and can’t bring, click here.

If you have current prescriptions or over-the-counter medications you plan to keep, be sure to lock them up or store them safely out of reach. Together, we can save lives and help curb the opioid epidemic!

Military CDL Program

If you have a military license issued by any military facility that allows you to operate a military commercial vehicle, there is the possibility that you can use it to obtain a Wisconsin CDL. This process allows you to obtain a CDL by waiving the skills test due to your experience and training with these vehicles in the military. To qualify for the skills test waiver program:

  • You must still pass the commercial knowledge testing required to operate the requested commercial vehicles.
  • You must be a Wisconsin resident to be eligible.
  • This waiver does not cover the Hazardous Materials or School Bus endorsements.
  • This waiver is ONLY available to current and former (within one year after separation/retirement) members of the military service, including Reserve and National Guard units.
If you have been regularly employed in a qualifying Military Occupation Specialty (MOS) and have a military license issued by any military facility that allows you to operate a military commercial vehicle, there is the possibility that you can use it to evenly exchange for a Wisconsin CDL. This process allows you to obtain a CDL by waiving the knowledge testing and skills testing requirements due to your experience and training with these vehicles in the military.

The Biennial Budget contained a provision that requires the Department to waive the issuance, renewal or upgrading fees under s. 343.21(1)(d) and (n) for the commercial driver license and any applicable endorsement when the applicant for a commercial driver license presents a valid military commercial driver license.
