Joint Finance Committee Approves Aids for Farmer Mental Health and State Tourism

On Wednesday, I joined members of the state's budget committee to approve $200,000 for mental health assistance for Wisconsin's farmers. The hard-working people in our agriculture community need to know that we'll have their back in difficult times, and I was pleased to vote for this motion that passed with broad bipartisan support.
We also approved $1.5 million for tourism marketing that will help target new areas and let people know what a great place Wisconsin is to visit with their families on a vacation. The Department of Tourism will report back to the committee in a year to let us know the results of its marketing campaigns.

Congratulations!

A heartfelt congratulations to our constituent, Ashley Mathy, on being appointed to the Board for People with Developmental Disabilities.

Local Transportation Aid Details Announced

In our Joint Finance Committee public hearings on the state budget, we heard loud and clear that Wisconsinites want more money to fundroad projects. I’ve long advocated for more funding for local roads and voted for $90 million to support rural communities and their transportation needs.

Unfortunately, Governor Evers slashed the amount with his veto pen by $15 million. He also did not rule out that funds could be used for urban transit programs such as the Milwaukee trolley.

The Department of Transportation released criteria for the grant program yesterday, and I would encourage communities to reach out and apply for the money that’s left from our budget. It’s important to let Governor Evers know our road projects in the Northwoods need to be a priority. Hopefully, we can continue to make smart decisions to maintain our infrastructure in the North.

Connecting Northern Wisconsin With Broadband Expansion

This week, grant applications opened for the Rural Broadband Expansion Grant. Knowing how vital broadband is for a growing economy, I worked hard to keep these dollars in the state budget so our rural communities can continue to expand and thrive.

This fiscal year, $28 million is available and will make a major difference to keep Northern Wisconsin connected, but only if local communities take advantage of it. I would encourage those that qualify to consider applying for this grant.
