New Governor Tony Evers

Many of you have been contacting me about the recent elections, in particular, the election of Governor-elect Tony Evers. Congratulations to Tony Evers on his victory. I look forward to working with him and his cabinet to keep moving Wisconsin forward.

Before writing about the future, I want to thank Governor Walker and his team for their service to Wisconsin. The last eight years have been one of the most dynamic periods in Wisconsin politics. It has been my good fortune to serve in a period of time when public policy in Wisconsin has moved into the 21st century. It bears repeating, since 2010, an over $3 billion deficit has been wiped out.  Unemployment of over 9 percent has been replaced by employers having a worker shortage.  Most importantly, wages are rising for the middle class.

While fixing some of the fundamental problems in Wisconsin the last eight years, we have advanced reforms in numerous other ways. Rural broadband is expanding. The HOPE agenda is recognized nationwide for tackling the scourge of drug/opioid abuse. We are a national leader creating opportunities for the disabled to find work. College tuition has been frozen for six years after years of relentless increases, and four of my colleagues identified a billion dollar slush fund at the UW system.  Are there further challenges ahead?  Absolutely, but it is important to remember where we came from eight short years ago.

As we look forward to the next few years, my primary focus will be on preserving the reforms of the past eight years. Additionally, I will be advocating for more money for local road aid.  Wisconsin has completed two, billion dollar projects in Milwaukee in the last decade: the Marquette and Zoo interchanges.  It is time to ramp up the investment in maintaining the roads in rural and northern Wisconsin.  Also, we need to continue to hold the line on taxes - and if possible reduce them.  I know you will spend your hard-earned dollars more effectively than turning more over to the state. I am very pleased that in the last few days of the campaign, Governor-elect Evers publicly stated he would raise no taxes.

I am particularly interested in the newly elected governor's choice as DNR secretary. The DNR is by far the most influential agency of state government affecting the northern economy. A decade ago the DNR had its boot heel on small business growth. If we return to the days of the Doyle DNR, I will vigorously oppose the DNR’s agenda.  If they choose to be a partner with small businesses and individuals to find solutions to everyday problems, I will be there to work with them.

In conclusion, best wishes to all of our newly elected officials.  I promise to work with Governor Evers when we have common ground.  I will defend the interests of northern Wisconsin when we disagree.
Joint Finance Committee

Speaking of Governor-elect Evers, this week the Joint Finance Committee met twice. The first meeting was on Tuesday to approve a budget for Governor-elect Evers' transition to Governor. The committee approved the requested $94,600 for the hiring of staff and supplies to make the transition as smooth as possible.
The Joint Committee on Finance listening to testimony
The second meeting took place on Wednesday to hear public testimony on tax incentives to keep the Kimberly Clark Cold Springs facility open near Neenah, WI. I support trying to retain the hundreds of jobs at stake.  However, we must balance the request for a specific company with the issue of fairness to other businesses in Wisconsin.  I am giving the proponents of the bill the opportunity to make their case for voting for the bill.  After the Thanksgiving break I will be making a decision whether to support the K-C legislation.  I encourage constituents to contact me with their opinions.
Eagle Scout Ceremony
Last Saturday, I attended an Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Matthew Palazzo. It was an honor to present Matthew a citation on behalf of Representative Felzkowski and myself. Matthew is an outstanding young man and I was glad to be a part of the special ceremony.

NorthLakes Clinic

Thursday, I attended an open house at the newest addition to the NorthLakes Clinic system in Park Falls.  Tim and Lori Wakefield, longtime owners of CHS Chiropractic, have transferred ownership to NorthLakes.  NorthLakes originated as a single clinic in Iron River, WI and has now grown to several locations.  NorthLakes will be adding clinics in Lakewood and White Lake in the near future to their system.  It's a pleasure to meet the leadership team at NorthLakes.  I wish them great success as they expand their operations.  In particular, it is good news for White Lake where the local clinic will remain open.

Good Luck Hunters!

Tomorrow kicks off the 2018 Wisconsin 9-day gun deer hunt. Stay safe and good luck to everyone who will be partaking.

It is never a bad idea to brush up on the 2018 Deer Hunting Regulations.

The DNR also has great info about deer hunting and they even did a cool video series called Wild Wisconsin
