Governor Evers Introduces Budget Bill

Yesterday, Governor Tony Evers delivered his state budget address. Following the address, the Joint Committee on Finance (JFC) met to introduced his $83.5 billion proposal for the next state budget.

There may be a few areas where Governor Evers and I can find common ground, but the level of spending he has proposed is not good for Wisconsin. His budget would increase spending $6.2 billion over two years which is an almost 10 percent increase! The new spending would require an extra $1,000 per person in Wisconsin to pay for it.

Despite claiming he was planning to raise no taxes while campaigning, the Governor raises several of them in his proposed budget. This includes property tax, the gas tax, capital gains tax, taxes on manufacturing companies, and more. The total tax increases total just over $1 billion.

If you would like to take a look at what is in the budget, please click here.

You can also view the Governor's budget address here.

My staff and I will be combing through the budget for the next few weeks. I will keep you updated on what we find. The next step in the budget process will be to have the JFC briefed by cabinet secretaries who will answer questions about the budget provisions that impact their state agencies. After that, the JFC members will travel across the state to host listening sessions.  During these sessions, the Committee will hear input from the public on the budget.

Big Salary Bump
Earlier this week, the MacIver institute released the salary information for all of the Governor's department heads. When comparing the salaries to the salaries of the previous administration, there is a 15 to 20 percent increase in compensation.

Gary Hartl
This afternoon, I was told that Antigo's Gary Hartl suffered a heart attack and is in the ICU. For those of you who may not know Gary, he is a wonderful radio personality. It is always a pleasure to interview with him and I wish him a speedy recovery.

Wisconsin Sheriffs

This week, I met with several sheriffs from across the 12th Senate District. We had great discussions on law enforcement issues and criminal justice reform. It was excellent to hear their feedback in response to marijuana legalization. Thank you to all the sheriffs who made it down this week. I appreciate you taking the time to meet with me. I'm sorry I forgot to get a picture with everyone!
