Senate Committee on Sporting Heritage, Mining, and Forestry

The Senate Committee on Sporting Heritage, Mining, and Forestry met in an executive session this week. Committee members voted and affirmed two bills to send to the Senate floor:
  • SB362 - relating to the age and hunting restrictions applicable to the hunting mentorship program.
  • SB395 - relating to the regulation of nonferrous metallic mining, prospecting, exploration, and bulk sampling, repealing administrative rules relating to wetlands, granting rule-making authority, and making an appropriation.
I am pleased that my colleagues voted to advance SB395 to the full Senate for a vote. I co-authored SB395 with Representative Rob Hutton (R-Brookfield) to rejuvenate a multi-billion industry in our state and bring family supporting jobs to our communities. I believe that safe, responsible mines will return jobs, economic growth, and security to our entire state and country.

Manufacturing Month

October is Manufacturing Month in Wisconsin. Manufacturing employs more than 461,000 Wisconsinites and contributes more than $56 billion to our state's economic output. It truly is the backbone to our economy.

Thanks to the reforms implemented by the legislature and Governor Walker, Wisconsin has significantly improved its business climate. This has afforded our state the opportunity to attract global manufacturers to expand their operations in the United States. Many of our local businesses are also taking the opportunity to expand within their current communities or around the state.

In order to celebrate this month, Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce is pairing up with the Department of Workforce Development, the Department of Public Instruction, the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, and the Wisconsin Technical College System to organize events across the state that highlight the significance that manufacturing holds in our economy.

Today, I had the opportunity to recognize Manufacturing Month at J&D Tube Benders in Schofield with Governor Walker and Representative Pat Snyder (R-Schofield).

Youth Deer Hunt

The Department of Natural Resources announced that the 2017 youth deer hunt will be held this weekend, October 7th and 8th. The youth hunt is an opportunity for boys and girls, ages 10-15, to hunt with a gun or other legal weapon prior to the regular firearm seasons.

The youth hunt is open to all residents and non-residents with a gun-deer license and appropriate tags. All youth hunters must be accompanied by a mentor that is over the age of 18. Youth between ages 12 and 15 who have completed hunter education may hunt within visual and voice range of their mentor.

Hunters who have not completed hunter education or ages 10 and 11, may gain hunting experience using the Hunting Mentorship Program. This requires the youth to hunt within an arm's reach of the mentor. There may be only one weapon possesed by the mentee and mentor.

Mentors are not allowed to hunt during the youth deer hunt period. The mentor is still required to possess a valid Wisconsin hunting license.

Florence County Library

The Florence County Library is celebrating its 30th Birthday this week. In October of 1986, the Florence County Board of Supervisors began to meet and evaluate the community's library needs. With no library system in the county, many felt that the community was restricted in learning opportunities for residents. Thanks to county and local leaders, the Florence County Library opened a year later.

After being the only county in Wisconsin in 1986, with no library system, Florence is now celebrating their library's 30th anniversary. I have always enjoyed working with Wisconsin Libraries and I believe that the 12th Senate District has been afforded the benefit of having high-quality libraries in our communities.

I want to congratulate the Florence County Library on their achievement!
Senate Scholar Program

Annually, the Wisconsin State Senate offers a unique educational experience to high school juniors and seniors called the Senate Scholar Program. The program lasts for a full week and includes three educational components: classroom instruction, roundtable discussion, and a lab practicum opportunity.

The week begins in a classroom setting.  Experts teach Scholars about constituent relations, research and development of legislation, and bill drafting.  Scholars engage in roundtable discussions with legislative support agency directors and staff, media, and lobbyists throughout the week resulting in further insight into all facets of the legislative process.

Scholars then put their knowledge into action.  Scholars staff the Senate floor during an actual legislative session and witness the Senate debate on legislation.  Scholars will also draft their own bills and amendments, form their own mock committee, and elect committee leadership.

Following educational opportunities during the day, there will be more moderated fun activities for the group. All Senate Scholars will be staying at the Madison Concourse Hotel, directly across from the Capitol Building. Program facilitators will stay at the hotel and be available 24 hours a day for the Scholars.

This is an exciting opportunity for high school seniors and juniors to engage in the legislative process prior to entering college. I always look forward to having the opportunity to meet Senate Scholars from the 12th Senate District.

Applications must be received by November 22, 2017. For more information, including a copy of the application and the address to mail it in to, please click here.
