It's Almost Show Time

As Solar Power International looms on the horizon, we are working hard to prepare for the best solar show of the year. Our plane tickets are purchased, our hotel rooms are booked and we're looking forward to SPI and sharing all of the exciting developments here at Standard Solar.

Whether it's our community solar e-book, our Flushing Community Schools project or what we learned at the Florida League of Cities and the Maryland Association of Counties shows we attended this month, we have a lot to talk about - and we can't wait to tell you all about it in Salt Lake City.

There are two topics that we're sure to hear a lot about at the show - the investment tax credit (yes, it's before the Congress again) and the subject of tariffs. It's time to rally the troops again to defend the ITC, and we have to figure out how to respond to these tariffs with which this administration keeps hammering the solar industry. Those are the overwhelming issues facing the industry right now, and we're fascinated to hear from you and get your thoughts on how to handle them.

In this edition of the newsletter, we discuss:

  • The new eBook—Community Solar: What You Need to Know (free download)
  • What the possible implications are of the current Section 201 tariff review (we lay out three possible scenarios that we think are most likely);
  • What our CDO Tony Clifford got right - and wrong - in his testimony 40+ years ago in his testimony before Congress; and
  • The celebration of the completion of our Flushing Community Schools project in Michigan.
Enjoy!

eBook on Community Solar Offers Critical Insight On Executing Successful Community Solar Projects

Community solar is often an ideal solution that allows solar consumers, including residences, businesses, schools and towns to join the Solar Revolution. As community solar increases in popularity so does the need for funding of these projects. But, as an emerging segment of the industry, community solar has been one of the least understood—at least until now. Nationally known community solar expert Standard Solar has launched a new eBook—Community Solar: What You Need to Know.

“As we’ve watched the community solar market emerge, we’ve noted a significant lack of resources to educate those looking to do these types of projects,” said Scott Wiater, Chief Executive Officer and President, of Standard Solar. “Based on our expertise in the field, we can help fill this critical information gap and developed this eBook to offer potential partners and customers a clear and concise guide to community solar.”

Section 201, The Sequel: What Will Come of the Solar Tariffs?

In February 2018, President Donald J. Trump imposed 30% tariffs on imported solar modules (the infamous Section 201 tariffs) in an attempt reputedly to bring manufacturing jobs back to the United States.

With the impending mid-term review of the Section 201 tariffs, our CDO Tony Clifford examines the outcomes brought about thus far by the tariffs, the health of the solar industry and the how pricing has been affected.

What I Got Right (And Wrong) 43 Years Ago Before Congress

Our CDO Tony Clifford recently rediscovered a transcript of testimony he gave (along with his then-colleague Dr. Joseph Lindmayer) in 1976 to the Joint Economic Committee of the U.S. Congress. The title of his testimony, and you can probably guess the subject, was “Some Public Policy Aspects of Photovoltaic (PV) Development.”

Even at that young age, he was a solar policy geek.
