President's Corner

With all the rain this spring and summer, many individuals around the Saint Louis area have been left to clean up water damaged homes potentially exposing them to elevated levels of mold. For the month of August AIHA Saint Louis welcomes Luke Curtis MD, MS, CIH to present on "Mold and Bacteria Exposure Due To Water Damage". Luke has many years of experience with indoor air quality and has published multiple papers on the subject. This month's presentation meeting will be held at Trail Head in Saint Charles on Thursday the 15thof August.
As a kind reminder, AHIA will be hosting the Crawl Fish Boil at Kirkwood Park on September 19th! More details to come! We would love to see you all there and please feel free to bring guest!
Last week as I was having lunch with a dear friend/mentor when it was brought to my attention that I needed to have a change of perspective. Lately I have been concerned with the IH field being one that is dying. Even with our own local chapter, it seems like climbing Everest to get local professionals engaged or to attend meetings as we have many retiring from the field and what seems like few entering it. When I spoke of my concerns at lunch, my mentor leaned in and said "The IH field is not dying, it's evolving". After sitting there for a few seconds in silence, I realized he was absolutely right. AIHA National has begun to realize the changes in the IH and field and has made it a part of its public policy agenda by taking the following steps:
  • Urging policymakers to significantly increase funding for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Education and Research Centers (ERCs);
  • Encouraging middle and secondary school career counselors, teachers, and other personnel to make students aware of career opportunities in the environment, health, and safety field; and
  • Supporting programs to get environment, health, and safety professionals into elementary, middle-level, and secondary school classrooms to talk about career opportunities.
So with current and upcoming changes in the IH Field, what can our local chapter do in the Saint Louis area to get more individuals interested in the profession?
