Kia ora whanau,

What an eventful term it has been. Often people think schools “slow down” towards the end of a term, but here at Mercury Bay our staff and students have been giving it their all right to the end.

12 students left on Saturday night for Japan. Already they have experienced the bullet train, seen cherry blossoms and I imagine had a few “food adventures” as well! See below for more details.

We have 18 students away at the Area Schools coaching clinic in Hamilton with Mr Smith and Mrs McCleery. Our senior student leaders are also preparing for their trip to Akaroa which takes place in the holidays.

Gary Hinds and 7 of our senior students are off to Nepal on Thursday night. We are crossing our fingers that they manage to get off the Peninsula safely in light of the weather that is expected to hit.

In regards to the weather, any information we have, we communicate as quickly as we can via email, facebook and Coromandel FM. It would help us hugely if you are able to check these modes of communication if you are unsure of what is going on. When these events hit, we often have a greatly reduced staff which means even manning the phones is very problematic.

On behalf of all our staff, we would like to thank you for your continued support this term and we wish you a relaxing break with your families. Please keep safe

Nga mihi,

MBAS Dressage Team

Our MBAS dressage team represented us at the North Island Schools dressage competition. The girls ( Kalani, Olivia, Amelia and Sage) represented the school awesomely.

Kalani placing 1st and 4th in her division in the 15years and over age group. Sage placing 9th and Olivia and Amelia a tenth in the 14years and under age group. Well done Team.

MBAS Japan Study Tour 2017

On Sunday 9th of April, 12 students and 3 staff headed off for an adventure in Japan. Two weeks away from school and families, immersed in the Japanese culture. They have worked hard for a year or more planning and fundraising for the tour. We can't wait to hear all about their time away and learning. Below are a couple of pictures from their first dew days.

The carnival team are looking for a new committee members to work with our Carnival Co-ordinator and committee for the 2018 Carnival. If you are new to the area or looking for a way to get involved in our school community this is the perfect opportunity. Please contact Kay McDonald on 027 555 7566 or
Thank you!

Year 7-9 'Choices' a success

Our Year 7-9 students have been joining forces and choosing a 'choice' subject this term. One class finished their projects today and were giving them a test flight on the school field this afternoon. Mr Fletcher has had a group of students designing and making boomerangs over the last few weeks. They have learnt about aero dynamics (it's basically two aeroplane wings joined together), wood work and alot of sanding! Some of the test flights were a success, others not so great and ended in pieces!

Bike and Scooter safety

Please remind children to be safe on their scooters and bikes coming to and from school. There have been a couple of near misses at intersections and with pedestrians. Cook Drive gets quite congested after school, scooters should be aware of pedestrians and give way to them on the footpath please. Bicycles also need to give way to pedestrians and be aware of traffic entering and exiting side streets.
