Providing hospitality to low-income immigrants with legal services, advocacy, & education May 2020
Dear New England JFON Family:
Recently, I wrote to all the New England JFON (NEJFON) supporting congregations to express our gratitude for their ongoing support and especially the generous response to the 2019 Special New England Annual Conference Appeal. I noted that the generous 2019 congregational and individual support secured our five legal clinics for 2020 as well as allowed the NEJFON Board of Directors to make a $10,000 grant to the Conference Galatians 6:2 Fund.
The Galatians 6:2 Fund was established to support undocumented families in the most affected immigrant New England United Methodist congregations. The grant has been added to Conference funding to assist families who are struggling with rental arrearages and possible dislocation after the state eviction moratorium is lifted.
The NEJFON Board was blessed with this opportunity to expand our shared ministry of working for immigration justice. While our mission is to provide free and quality legal services through acts of local church clinic hospitality-- your NEJFON does much more!
NEJFON has contributed $1,600 to assist partner attorneys in the payment for biometrics fees to speed up visa applications of unaccompanied minors.
Granted $6,000 in financial support for the Springfield JFON Clinic’s English as Second Language partnership.
And recently, volunteers from the Woburn JFON Clinic teamed up to provide $1,300 in financial assistance and material aid to a 17-year-old asylum seeker and her infant child.
In short, the need is great among our immigrant neighbors and particularity in this uncertain time of COVID-19. NEJFON because of your support has been able to contribute to the relief efforts in our local communities and congregations while our partner attorneys continue working on the NEJFON client caseload.
The NEFJON Board invites you to help match their $10,000 grant. Individual board members are sending in their contributions and we are fast approaching $1,000 already. The plan is to send an additional $10,000 to the Galatians 6:2 Fund. Any funds received over $10,000 will support the ongoing legal work of NEJFON.
On behalf of the NEJFON Board of Directors thank you for your support. Please send your Matching Grant donations to NEJFON, 421 Common Street, Belmont, MA 02478 or visit the Donate page of newenglandjfon.org. Add “Galatians 6:2” to the memo of your check or select “Galatians 6:2” as Designation for your on-line donation.
