The Stream

Over these next few weeks, we are going to be sending out a devotional to you from your church family!  We are calling these devotionals, The Stream, hoping, that just as a stream of water brings life to everything it touches, so, these words of encouragement will do the same for you.

What Do I Do Now?
Jim Butler

At the beginning of the “quarantine” a meeting was called for Hope Mission Volunteers. We discussed how the Pandemic would impact the programs at 211 Main. The bottom line for me was that those over 65 were vulnerable and should stay home quarantining themselves. The ministry for Hope Mission would continue but; What do I do now? What is next?

For a week I worked around the house and read waiting for God to speak to me. One day I picked up my brush and began a painting. It was then I recalled another time in my life when I felt lost not knowing what to do. It was a very low point of my life. One day at I work I became overwhelmed and told my colleagues I had to leave. I went to my apartment and began a large painting of a farm house.

I needed to draw wood shingles on the receding side of the building which had to be in perspective to look right. I laid the large canvas on the floor, established the horizon line a vanishing point. This point was 4 – 5 feet beyond the canvas. As I drew the lines, I became aware how centered and calm I was.

As we journey through our lives there are times that we become overwhelmed by life. Sometimes from our own fault sometimes because of life itself, like Covid-19. During these times we turn to our usual source of strength. Sometimes we are so lost we can’t find that source, or even forget where it is.

That afternoon as I drew those lines, I was reminded that my focus point in this life is God. God is the source of my strength. God is always my companion. It is God who calls me to walk this path and I know I am never alone in my fears.

A time of crisis is an opportunity for vision. During this period quiet yourself in prayer and wait for God to appear right where you are! Focusing on the hope we find in Jesus Christ we know God is greater than the chaos we find ourselves in. In the living of your daily life look for the signs of God and walk towards that point on the horizon. It’s not what we do to evil that destroys its power its how we walk through it with the grace of God.

Psalm 121
1 I lift up my eyes to the hills from where will my help come?
2 My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
3 He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber.
4 He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade at your right hand.
6 The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.
7 The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.
8 The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forevermore.

Salmo 121
Cântico de Peregrinação.
1 Levanto os meus olhos para os montes
    e pergunto:
De onde me vem o socorro?
2 O meu socorro vem do Senhor,
    que fez os céus e a terra.
3 Ele não permitirá que você tropece;
o seu protetor se manterá alerta,
4 sim, o protetor de Israel não dormirá;
ele está sempre alerta!
5 O Senhor é o seu protetor;
    como sombra que o protege,
