The Stream

Over these next few weeks, we are going to be sending out a devotional to you from your church family!  We are calling these devotionals, The Stream, hoping, that just as a stream of water brings life to everything it touches, so, these words of encouragement will do the same for you.

Do Everything Without Grumbling
By
Abigail Williamson

Hello everyone. My name is Abigail Williamson and I am a high school student at RiverCross.

It took me a little bit to decide what I wanted to write about but I decided I would do something from Philippians, seeing as that is what the whole church has been discussing. I was thinking I would share some thoughts about chapter 2 verses 12-18 one day but remained unsure. Then the next day, I ended up leading small group for youth group via Zoom on the same passage. 'Hey, this must be the right passage then!' I thought to myself. I knew God was leading me to be a blessing.

The main theme of this passage is set in the title that says Do Everything Without Grumbling. I think it's quite an appropriate topic for these days we are going through. It doesn't just say what we shouldn't do - grumbling and arguing - but tells us what we should do - shine like stars.

Verse 12 talks about how the people in Philippi obeyed in presence of Paul and in his absence. It also says that the Philippians obeyed much more in Paul's absence then his presence. This is because God was working in them to act for a good purpose. I feel this can remind us that in the absence of our church family we can work all the more to grow our faith. There are still opportunities out there, even when we can't see them.

Here comes the hard part. It then says in verse 14 to do everything without grumbling or arguing. I know, this is tough right now. There is so much to tear us down and to complain about. Whether the matter is small or large we seem to find a way to complain. It's almost our nature. However, we are then told that it is so that we can become blameless and pure, "children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation." So please, don't complain.

As we hold to the word of life, we shine like stars in this world. God has a plan for all of us in every situation that goes on today, tomorrow, and the future! He wants us to be lights for Him in the he me ration as we hold onto the truth found in His word.

Verses 17 and 18 talk about how Paul is being poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from the Philippians faith. Therefore, Paul rejoices. He also asks that they rejoice with him. Our actions should not be done in vain and we should rejoice for the work God is doing through us in the COVID-19 pandemic. He has a plan and will see it though.

Dear God, help us to live for You in these challenging situations. You are in control of what happens and have us as part of Your good and perfect plan. Help us all not to grumble or complain but to shine for You today. Show us what to do and give us strength to live Your truth. Show us what is going on past the pandemic. We are glad for what You are doing and rejoice.

12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.

Philippians 2:12-18
