The Stream

Over these next few weeks, we are going to be sending out a devotional to you from your church family!  We are calling these devotionals, The Stream, hoping, that just as a stream of water brings life to everything it touches, so, these words of encouragement will do the same for you.

Sovereign Over Us
Kelly Rogers

Like many of you, I have been inspired during this time of quarantine to slow down, and spend more time reading and reflecting on God’s Word. The truth is, during the normal busyness of life, schedules and kids, it is sometimes a struggle for me to set time aside for daily devotions and prayer, and so I was actually really grateful to be forced out of work for awhile and to allow myself to recharge. What I learned is that being a stay at home mom to two active kids is no joke…and in some ways, I felt more drained at the end of each day then when I am working. For this reason, I relished the quiet time I made for myself each morning to pour out my anxieties to God, and to be filled with His overwhelming peace.

When I heard about the mass shooting in Nova Scotia in April, my heart was so troubled over the state of our world. As if a global pandemic is not enough, I could not fathom that there could be more bad news, and I struggled with how to process it all.  One of the devotionals I read around this time was about the Sovereignty of God; that there is nothing that happens in the universe that is outside of God’s influence and authority. Colossians 1:16-17 says “For by Him all things were created, in heaven and earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities- all things were created through Him and for Him. And he is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” He is Sovereign over all of creation; He is all-governing and all-wise, and He decides how He will carry out His sovereign will. To put it simply, God is in control.  As His children, we can take comfort in the fact that no matter what we face in life, God is sovereign. And because He loves us, nothing will ever come into our lives that He does not decree or allow, to accomplish his perfect will.  In Romans 8:28, it says “ And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose”.  Ephesians 1:11 “ Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God, for He chose us in advance, and He makes everything work out according to his plan.”

As I have wrestled with understanding God’s will and purpose for tragedy and suffering, I take comfort from these verses that allow me to walk in peace. Knowing that God has chosen me as His child, and He is in complete control of my life and everything that happens around me, inspires me to worship Him with joy and gladness.  We may not understand why things happen the way that they do, but we can trust that He knows the bigger picture, and He will sustain our souls as His will unfolds.  Consider the lyrics of the song “ Sovereign over us” by Michael W. Smith, if you need some encouragement during these difficult and strange times.

There is strength within the sorrow
There is beauty in our tears
And You meet us in our mourning
With a love that casts out fear
You are working in our waiting
                You’re sanctifying us
                When beyond our understanding
                You’re teaching us to trust
Your plans are still to prosper
                You have not forgotten us
You’re with us in the fire and the flood
                You’re faithful forever
Perfect in love, You are Sovereign over us

16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
Colossians 1:16-17

Colossenses 1:16-17
