Arsal
Educational
After graduation in September we re-started classes with new students replacing those that went to public school and a number of previous students. On October 5, 2018 we celebrated World Teacher’s day with the team in Arsal.
Extra-curricular activities
During the past year, we carried out many activities whether inside or outside the center, the most important of which are described below.

Student excursion to celebrate their graduation. We took them to the amusement park and playground spread over three days. They had a wonderful time! In June the first group of women graduated from the center. We celebrated them and distributed sweets to everyone at the center.

For Mother’s Day, we organized a little concert in the courtyard of the center in order to celebrate all mothers. Each class performed a speech in French or choreographed a dance.

In October, we started a beauty course for women and youth.

The team conducted household surveys in the camps surrounding the center about 20 camps in order to register new students, youth and women to attend classes at the center.

Distributions

In October, we distributed second-hand clothes to the women. In November, we distributed new winter clothes to students at the center. In May, we distributed second-hand shoes to students. In December, new shoes (plastic boots) were distributed to all students at center.

Our team distributed 800kg of dates first to students at the center and their families, after which we completed the distribution for the surrounding camps.

Brussels
By the end of 2018 we've done over 50 activities with the three centres in Brussels. The majority of these have been on Saturdays with the youth at the Red Cross Centre in Uccle, but as well on Sundays at the Fedasil Centre in Neder-Over-Hembeek. and Fedasil Centre in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, a sister-centre to the one in NOH.

These activities have focused not only on working on a number of themes with the youth, ranging from discovering professions to visiting the Royal Observatory, but also partnerships with local organisations to create a network for the youth. In 2018, 16 partnerships with local organisations have been done in the past 10 months, ranging from learning about negotiation skills to cycling around Brussels.

Activities include:

Football match with University students, a visit of Chocolate Musuem, bicycle tour around the city, Royal Observatory visit, negotiation skills workshop

...with the support and dedication of our team of over 30 international volunteers!
'Just Married': Mervat's Story

Continuing our comic series on early marriage, this month we learn about Mervat's story through the incredible artwork and storytelling of Félix Brassier.

Read all the comics in the series here.

Since the beginning of 2018, we have been bringing you our stories we hear from the ground about the practice of child marriage. This started when our chairperson visited Lebanon last September and was served a cup of tea by a child bride.

Since then, SB OverSeas has been determined to raise awareness on the subject. Click here to read the first comic in the series and also see our child marriage storiespublications and read about our panel events.
