Fall 2017

Great venue. Great food and wine. Great friends.
All for a great cause!

Chefscapades, the annual fundraiser for Interfaith Community Shelter, was held on June 28 at the Drury Plaza Hotel Santa Fe with over 150 people in attendance. With support from sponsors, guests, volunteers, staff and Board of Directors, over $60,000 was raised that night to support our mission! ICS will use these funds for many needs at the shelter from more beds in the women's dormitory to a desperately needed new ice maker in the kitchen.

REFLECTIONS ON THE GOOD WILL AND EFFORTS OF ALL INVOLVED IN ICS

Recently, I saw a video of Jimmy Carter thanking the volunteers at the Habitat for Humanity site where he collapsed from dehydration.  He spoke to them about how he had grown up in the segregated south, that his mother was a nurse who worked long hours and, subsequently, he was raised by a black woman who molded his relationship with God, as well as his relationship with all people.  Before thanking the small cadre of volunteers surrounding him, he looked at his audience and told them that what he sees when he looks at them are “human rights heroes.”

MAKING A HOME IN SANTA FE THROUGH VOLUNTEERING

Part of making a home in Santa Fe for Kathleen Watson Nadler is finding the right place to volunteer.

“I want to get involved in my community,” Kathleen said. “My husband and I had lived part-time in Santa Fe, and we moved here last spring to live full-time. I asked neighbors and friends about places to volunteer. Interfaith Community Shelter kept coming up.”

Nichole Sorenson came to Santa Fe almost a year ago. Life had not been easy for her. There were family struggles, personal trials. She needed to start over and that wasn’t something she could do alone.

She had tried to work with shelters and agencies in other towns, but it was the help she received from the staff of ICS that made the difference.

JOINED IN SONG, CHOIR CREATES MORE THAN MUSIC

When voices join in song, sometimes more than music is created. Community can be created. Joy and empowerment can be present. Uplifting spiritual prayer. And heart.

This all happened this summer when the Santa Fe Desert Chorale (SFDC) came to ICS and formed the Santa Fe Interfaith Community Shelter Street Choir.

READ THE STORY
ICS has over 1,850 volunteers that contribute an estimated 16,000 hours of service in a fiscal year. We are largely run by the good faith and effort of others, as well as donations. Please donate today! To volunteer, email us at interfaithsheltersf@gmail.com.

OUR DEEPEST THANKS!

As many of you know, part of our funding is through grants we receive from organizations throughout our community.  One of our community members sponsored a grant given to us by the Catholic Foundation.  Our sponsor was Santa Maria de La Paz, and the award was for $7,000.  We are deeply grateful for the generous hearts and minds in the community of Santa Fe!
