Pastor's Devotional...
May 23, 2019

Shame (“I am bad and don’t deserve acceptance by others.”) is a devastating force, too repugnant to face and begin the healing process. It also isolates us from others (lest they discover/see our shame). Triggers are physical appearance (body image), childhood abuse, sexuality issues, mental or physical health, aging, religion, etc.
Repressed shame unconsciously limits the joy of life and puts “the abundant life” Jesus offers out of reach. Here’s a few indicators you’re being silently subjected to this insidious force:
1. touchy; overreact to any criticism
2. a cutting, put down sense of humor
3. paranoia; suspicious other are mostly out to harm you
4. constantly shooting yourself in the foot; self-defeating mistakes
5. loss of relationships; others withdrawing from you emotionally
A great benefit of Easter is that Jesus “took our shame” to the cross (Hebrews 12:1-3) and broke its hold over us. Faith and trust in Him releases a shame antidote into our life. “Anyone who believes in Him will never be put to shame.” (Romans 10:11)
Psychologists see manifestations of shame in physical posture, a slumping torso and lowered head. (Hey, we even see that in our pet dogs!) Yet Jesus says at His return, “to lift up your heads, your Redeemer draws near.” And in I John 2:28 “Abide in Him so when He appears you will not shrink in shame from Him.”
May you stand firm, assured shame cannot rule a life submitted to the Savior and redeemed by His cross.
Holy Spirit, expose any hidden shame polluting my spirit and cleanse me through faith in the wonderful, sacrificial flow of His life’s blood on the cross. Amen.
