Pastor's Devotional...
October 8, 2020

“…don’t worship any other god, for the Lord whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.” (Exodus 34:12-14) Jan used to be a little jealous about me, even to the point of wanting to discuss who was hired to work in the office. MUCH to my dismay, I was devastated when at 50 years of age, I breached the subject of a potential hire only to be rebuffed, “You’re safe now, I don’t feel a need to give input on that anymore.” It took me several years to get over that!
Is that  how God is jealous? Is His jealousy like the “green eyed monster” in Shakespeare’s “Othello”? Is He a little insecure about our relationship? Of course not. A closer reading of the word translated “jealous” in the Hebrew and Greek original languages (“zelos” in the latter) reveals zealous is a better rendering.
Just as we are zealous that our loved ones have only the best, just as our love is more intense for them than others less committed, so is our God zealous/jealous that we never allow or settle for the second best or make a god of any possession, person, dream, goal or activity in His place. This passion isn’t based on any insecurity but a depth of love beyond our understanding.
Keep Him first, trust Him most, revel in that most passionate love, know that zeal is so intense because you are so valuable! Find a new sense of worth/value in this divine zeal.
Jealous/Zealous God, I worship Your Holy Name and rejoice in Your boundless love. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
