Pastor's Devotional...
May 21, 2020

“We have…hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” Hebrews 6:19
Psychiatrist, writer and TV personality, Dr. Dale Archer from New Orleans worked with victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita as well as the great recession.
“I quickly found that there were two types of physical survivors: psychological victims and psychological survivors. I realized that the mindset had nothing to do with money, education, how much was lost, or how many loved ones died.”
Here are the two types of people that I see:
  • Psychological victims: these individuals are passive, pessimistic and look to the past. They ask, “Who will help me?” They despair and are all consumed by their loss, refusing to help themselves.
  • Psychological survivors: these folks are active, optimistic and look to the future. They ask, “How can I help myself?” They grieved but continued to persevere and fight too.”
His findings are consistent with the Scriptural truth of Romans 5 where Paul speaks of actually rejoicing in suffering because, with the Spirit’s comfort, strength and guidance, the result is not just victimization but new endurance, character and a deeper sense of hope in God’s provision.
Dr. Archer soon discovered that his primary responsibility to such patients was to teach them how to develop and be fed by hope; “…to turn the victim mindset into a survivor mindset and that meant restoring or instilling hope.” (Read next week what this process involved in his professional treatment.)
Prayer: Holy Spirit, I am one of those who “know and love the Lord and are called according to His purpose.” My hope is anchored in His power and faithfulness. May it always sustain me to persevere creatively in tough times! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
