Pastor's Devotional...
January 9, 2020

Don’t miss the Renewal of Baptism services this weekend. What a powerful way to re-experience an infilling of the Holy Spirit. My prayer for you is that same Dove that descended at Jesus’ baptism will come down on you also!
We’re focusing in the message on willpower, learning that like a muscle, it can be built up, strengthened by exercise and pushing through temptation or a challenge. In the Willpower Instinct by Kelly McGonigal, we learn it has 3 components, “I will”, the capacity to stay after, push through a challenge; “I won’t”, the capacity to resist temptation; and “I want”, the long range dream, plan, hope for our future that fuels the prior two.
An intriguing insight from research is that our physical limitations (“I’m too tired, fatigued, to continue an activity”) is partly a trick the mind plays on the body; that we often can go beyond our physical limits even when our “body” seems to be screaming STOP. (I do this often over the years in training for a long distance race).
Similarly, our body often short sells the extent of our will power, our capacity for saying “no” or for “keeping on keeping on” when the going gets tough. I believe the strengthening of our spirit by the Holy Spirit in baptism reinforces the “I will” and “I won’t” phases of will power because as a believer, we all have an “I want” to be like and be with Jesus now and forever.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, empower the “I want” of my willpower to renew my capacity for persistence and perseverance as I follow my Savior. In His Name, Amen.
