June 2020 Newsletter

 It's been long...
The wonderful long days of summer are upon us! The longer-than- expected pandemic has left us longing to gather together for our Hayesville/Clay County traditions like fireworks, concerts and festivals on the square. At those times when the future path seems so long, its always good to look back and see how far we've come.
CCCRA has been at this a long time! CCCRA is a non-profit organization devoted to preserving and improving Clay County, NC, for its residents and visitors. Powered by a strong volunteer engine, CCCRA is funded through memberships, donations and grants. Incorporated in 1998 and earning 501(c)(3) non-profit status in 2000,
our work started even earlier, with beautification and community events over 23 years ago. Working collaboratively with local governments and other organizations in Clay County and surrounding counties, CCCRA has four key areas of focus: The Historic Clay County Courthouse/Beal Center, Cherokee Culture, Trails & Greenways and Community Engagement.
2020 Concert Series
We're longing for the days when we're able to gather for the CCCRA concerts on the square. To ensure everyone's safety, we're adhering to the NC guidelines and adjusting our concert schedule accordingly. No worries, our plan is to stretch summer long into fall!

Our first concert is now scheduled for July 3rd.

Food & beverage service begins at 6pm and music at 7pm.

All concerts are free, courtesy of CCCRA and our sponsors.
Red Bucket donations to support our mission are appreciated.

Schedule subject to change.

Although it's not even July, we find ourselves longing for the warmth of friends and family and Christmas! If "shelter-in-place" organizing efforts revealed you have a few too many decorations, think about donating them to the Beal Center. From bows to tree ornaments, we are collecting traditional and vintage decor to "deck the halls".  Contact Kirsten at (828) 415-1623 or bealcenterevents@icloud.com to arrange a drop-off time.
While the Beal Center is closed to the public to comply with COVID-19 guidelines, your support is even more important. If you are in a position to "Back the Beal", please donate online to the Historic Courthouse Fund, or mail your tax-deductible donation to PO Box 1533, Hayesville NC 28904.

Our resident historian Dorothy Ethridge is longing for more materials for the Paul & Ann Price History Room.  Do you have a piece of memorabilia related to the historic courthouse you're willing to share?  Originals can be reproduced and returned quickly. Contact Dorothy at (828) 389-8825 or julesrdot27@frontier.com.

Meet Michael Borkman, Board Member
Michael Levi Borkman was born and raised in Chattanooga, TN.  As a chief human resources officer, business consultant and executive business coach, Michael spent time in Chattanooga, Atlanta and Knoxville before landing in Hayesville in 2012.

Many of you may be familiar with Michael as the host of the #1-rated talk show, eXtreme Carolina, which airs locally on 95.1 WJRBand available via podcast. Michael also lends his professional voice as an MC for Mountain Movers and Shakers and other local events.

Michael began volunteering with CCCRA when he was recruited to the board in 2018, and enjoys being a part of the team. He's a key member of the Historic Courthouse Committee, and was instrumental in getting our beautiful Christmas Tree planted on the square last year. Besides CCCRA, Michael also volunteers his time with the Jackie Ward Foundation for Academics & Arts and mentoring children.

A recent newlywed, Michael and Susan Joy Borkman married on 2/20/2020 at the Episcopal Church of the Messiah in downtown Murphy. (No excuse for forgetting that anniversary, right?) His family includes three daughters, two grandchildren and three great-grandkids. In his downtime (not sure when that is), Michael enjoys gardening, reading, playing chess and a variety of music.
