Announcement
Dear Friends of City Roots CLT,

We are thrilled to share that within the next couple weeks, we will be closing on our first CLT Rehab House, thanks to a budding partnership with the Rochester Land Bank. Utilizing the community land trust model, this house, located in the Beechwood neighborhood, will be sold to an income-qualifying, first-time homebuyer when the rehab is complete.

We need your help in order to cover our biggest expense - a new roof, soffit, and gutters. We’re asking for the community to once again rise up and show its support!

Hit the donate button above to make your financial contribution!

Last year dozens of donations, both large and small, allowed City Roots to help a courageous homeowner fight back and win against an unjust foreclosure in a huge victory for our community.

The new house is a great find. It has three bedrooms, lots of natural wood, a stained glass window, beautiful staircase, and an inviting front porch from which to greet neighbors and watch the world. The furnace, electricity, and windows have all been updated or replaced.

The big fix is the roof. The roof is currently leaking and the soffit and gutters are completely gone. Luckily, right now the water damage is minimal, but it’s crucial that we get a new roof on there ASAP, so that we can stabilize the house and get to work!

We're counting on all of our supporters to give what you can and to help spread the word. We'll also be asking for those who can, to come out and lend a hand so that we can keep costs down while still providing a high-quality level of improvements to the house (no previous experience with home rehab projects needed!).

If you're willing to help, let us know. Once the closing takes place, we'll be having a kick-off event at the house, so stay tuned for details!

Thank you for supporting permanent affordability, community control, and development without displacement!

We hope to see those of you that want to help with the fundraising effort tomorrow at our Fundraising Committee Meeting  (1/3, 5:30 PM, New City Cafe, 441 Parsells Ave). At this meeting we'll be focusing on our fundraising campaign ($1,320 raised so far!). How else can we spread the word? What should we put in the updates on GoFundMe? Are there businesses that may be willing to support our efforts through labor, material, and monetary donations? Should we have a big kick-off event at the house?

We'll also have several exciting grant opportunities that folks can help with offline.

Can''t make it this Thursday, but still want to help? No problem! Send us a message and we'll get you connected! Further down this email is a list of 10 ways YOU can contribute. Together we can make permanent affordability, development without displacement, and community control a reality in Rochester!

History of Rochester Gentrification

History of Rochester Gentrification as part of the 2nd Annual " Fit Well, & Sustainable at 540 Campaign

Facilitated by educator Shane Wiegand of the City Roots Community Land Trust this workshop will explore and deconstruct the history of redlining, restrictive covenants, and racist/discriminatory housing practices throughout Rochester's history of urban development.

How have these exploitative practices led to the disinvestment of the inner city, downtown; eventually leading to displacement in the present is just one of many essential questions that will be explored.

What individual and collective actions can we take today to dismantle and end systematic displacement of marginalized communities and persons of color?
