Hello City Roots friends!

Happy Holidays! We have so much to share with you all!

The mission of our CLT is to create and preserve permanently affordable, community controlled land and housing in Rochester. Central to this mission is the membership of our organization. Our members are the community who exercise democratic decision making and control over both our organization and the land it owns. These are the people we want to be accountable above all else.

However, the reality of non-profit work is that, at least in part, organizations are accountable to the people who fund them. In addition to supporting the sustainability of our organization, donating to our general operating funds deepens our accountability to you, our members, and our community.

For the holiday season, we will be highlighting our Community Partner Organizations and all they do for the community, and how City Roots collaborates with them! Until the end of the month, we'll be highlighting:

Third Thursday: General Updates & Help Us Choose a Graphic Designer!
Thursday, December 17  from 6-7 pm

Join City Roots for our December General Meeting! These meetings are great for both long-time CLT members and folks who are new to our organization. They happen once per month and are open to everyone in our community. We'd love to see you there!

At this month's General Meeting we will:
  • Spend some time getting to know one another
  • Learn about the different projects and committees that members can get involved in
  • Talk more about our logo, which designer we all like the best, and what we're all looking to see!
Typically at these meetings we also have a discussion and/or presentation on a relevant CLT topic, but this month we are encouraging everyone who joins us to attend the Rochester Housing Justice Alliance's Eviction Defense Training at 7pm!
See you soon!
The holidays are here! It's been a hectic year and City Roots CLT and our community has grown so much! We want everyone in  City Roots work to be acknowledged for all they do. If you haven't already, check out our website and submit a membership form now!  Our goal is to reach 200 members. We'll be reaching out to all of our prospective members on their vision for City Roots, and how they would like to be more involved. If you wanted to set-up a phone call or a coffee meeting to discuss City Roots CLT, please email Anastajah at

This month, City Roots and our partner organizations are kicking off the Campaign to Clean Up Goodman Plaza! Over the last few months, we've been hard at work learning about the history of Goodman Plaza, researching potential avenues for clean up and redevelopment, and canvassing the surrounding neighborhood to raise awareness and get our community involved in this campaign.

After all this hard work we are finally ready to share what we've learned with the community and kickoff a full campaign to Clean Up Goodman Plaza! Please join City Roots and our coalition partners to learn about the history of this site, get to know your neighbors, hear about the plans for our campaign, and most importantly how you can stay involved!

Please contact Graham Hughes with any questions about this campaign.
With over 107 evictions granted in the City of Rochester, the housing crisis that the organizations of the Rochester Housing Justice have warned about are finally in front of us all. There was a housing crisis pre-pandemic, with over 8,000 eviction taking place in Rochester annually. The Safe Harbor Act, one of the last federal protections that will keep families affected by COVID-19 in their homes, is set to expire in January, two weeks away. Illegal lockout evictions are happening all across the city, and landlords are taking extreme measures to extract families from their homes.

The Rochester Housing Justice Alliance has been extremely busy, with tenants reaching out daily for community support against their slumlords. We're still porch watching at Chris' home at 405 Brown Street! If you can spare at least one hour in the next few weeks to ensure he and his family stay in their home,
Sign up to be a porch-sitter for Chris' home here!

The Rochester Housing Justice Alliance will be holding an eviction defense training Thursday, December 16th at 7pm. Get trained in how to defend against evictions, explore what roles you might want to play in these actions, and learn about the systemic changes we are fighting for. The lives of our neighbors are at stake.
Eviction Resistance Support Needed!
Clianda is a Rochester community member whose eviction could happen this Friday, December 18th. She is experiencing a retaliatory eviction because she chose to speak out about uninhabitable conditions she and her 3 children are enduring. There isn't a money judgement against Clianda so she isn't protected by the Tenant Safe Harbor Act. This is why we need a universal Eviction Moratorium and Good Cause Eviction Protections to ensure that no tenant is turned out onto the street during the pandemic.

But those measures will take advocacy and time. We need the community to show up and turn out to keep Clianda in her home now while demanding better from our elected officials.
Eviction Outreach Canvassing
TODAY Thursday, December 17th at 57 Glasgow St. volunteers will be doing a special eviction outreach to individuals in the neighborhood. Come at 5:30 PM with your masks and winter coat. We will do about one hour of door knocking. Afterwards, attend the Eviction Defense Training at 7:00 PM.

Eviction Watch at 57 Glasgow
We will need people to watch out for Clianda and her family after the protest to ensure they are not removed from their home. Attend our
meeting today about Eviction Blockades and sign up for an eviction watch at her apartment here
CLT Member Spotlight: Victor Sanchez
Huge thank you to CLT board member, Victor Sanchez! Victor has been a star CLT member and is an amazing volunteer! He chairs our Policy & Governance committee & consistently offers to lend a hand, helping new CLT lessee members move in, attending work parties when we're rehabbing new CLT homes, meeting with potential founders, and most recently helping transport a washer & dryer set for a CLT lessee member when theirs broke down. Thank you again Victor for all that you do!
