Did you win recently?!

Did you solve a problem, untangle a mess, or ensure that something didn't become a problematic, tangled mess? Write it in your Brag File right now! Don't forget the details: what happened, what your role was, and what it says about your whole vibe. What's a Brag File? It's just a doc you keep your wins on, so you can use them in cover letters and interviews. Easier than trying to remember that one project you did 2 years ago!

Why is 9 to 5 still a thing?

We all know that different people perform differently at different times of day. Some of us are morning people, some are night owls, and many are in-between somewhere. So why do basically all middle-class jobs still focus on filling the office during "standard business hours"?

"Talk shop with people who do work you want to do."

Tell people that one of the best things they can do for their career is networking and you'll see most of them break into a cold sweat. But networking isn't about using people for their professional connections. I love the Nick Corcodilos definition above, but honestly you can expand it even further to just "talk shop with people you want to talk to." I also gave an example from my own job-hunting past in my advice column a couple months ago. Make friends!

ELU: Equal Pay Day + Motherhood

This month's Emotional Labor Union topic is motherhood, and their in-person DC meetup will be on 4/17. They're also doing a cool project where you can (anonymously!) post your salary compared to the industry average to help highlight discrepancies. Check both out in their latest newsletter.

Does your LinkedIn suck?

The HR Capitalist has a free, no-subscription-required guide to help you make it better. Not everyone needs LinkedIn, but its the #1 way that headhunters and recruiters are likely to find you, so if you're in a field where that's a major way to get jobs, it might be a good idea to spruce up the ol profile.

Are you a lawyer in DC?

This is such a cool gig. Represent indigent folks in eviction proceedings for the DC bar association! Work pro-bono but still get a paycheck!

Happy to help.

That's what MailChimp decided to title this field, and dang it, I think they were on to something. I'd love to help you out! I do cover letter and resume reviews, run an ongoing professional development membership program on Patreon, and write about work type stuff all the time, over on my website! I encourage you to check it out if you're into that kind of thing: www.ranavain.com
