Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Awareness Month

June is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Awareness Month. PTSD occurs in some people after they have been through or witnessed a life threatening situation. Examples of this are active combat, sexual or physical assault, childhood physical or sexual abuse, natural disaster, or an act of terror.

Though anyone can experience the symptoms of PTSD as a result of a traumatic life event, not everyone does. There is no definitive answer to why some people develop PTSD and some do not though there is greater risk with very intense or prolonged traumatic experiences. Statistically, of those who have experienced trauma, 1 in 10 men and 2 in 10 women develop PTSD.

It is natural after a traumatic event to have nightmares, relive the event, and have feelings of sadness and fear. When someone is suffering from PTSD, these symptoms last more than a couple of months. If symptoms persist, it is important to seek treatment early.

Several effective treatments are now available. Specific types of talk therapy help clients re-experience the upsetting event in a safe setting. With this support, people with PTSD learn skills that help lessen the impact of PTSD symptoms in their daily lives.

At ServiceNet’s outpatient clinics, all clinicians have been trained to support people who have suffered traumatic events. In the case of severe or persistent symptoms, we have clinicians who are experts in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy and other models proven to be effective in the treatment of PTSD.

Holyoke Brick Race

This year the Enrichment Center participated in the Great Holyoke Brick Race and came in Fourth Place out of 30 cars!

Charlie Cooley and some of his friends manufactured a base using a 3D printer, and Sullivan Metals in Holyoke was nice enough to donate a perfectly cut piece of lead. After surviving 11 rounds, "The Flying Pig" was taken out by "Crash", the Home Depot bucket full of cement.

Here are some photos from the event.  It was a fun event and we hope to compete again next year!

What was the problem?
Negative vacation/sick/personal time errors causing frustration with staff.

What's the solution?

Validation checks for any negative time.  If it sees negative time, it presents a message saying "there is a problem with your timesheet, contact IT" before the staff member even begins to fill one out.

Kudos to the Human Resources (HR) Team!
