June is Pride Month 

June is Pride Month and celebrates the LGBTQ (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer/Questioning) community. Initially, June was chosen by the LBGTQ community as Pride Month in commemoration of the Stonewall riots that occurred in New York City on June 28, 1969. This event is considered the birth of the LBGTQ rights movement.

The first Pride Parade was organized that same year. A small group proposed that the event be annual and be held the last Saturday in June to mark the anniversary of the Stonewall riots. The committee also contacted organizations across the country in hopes that there would be Pride Marches in other US cities.  When the New York City Pride Parade took place on June 28, 1970 there also were events in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago. The next year there were marches in many cities across the US and internationally.

President Bill Clinton was the first to declare June “Gay and Lesbian Pride Month”.  Obama also declared Pride Month in the years that he was president. He declared June “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month”. Every year, these Pride Celebrations are colorful and joyful and contribute to fighting the stigma against these groups. They also demonstrate to people who identify as LBGTQ that there is a wider community that they can rely on for support.

Mental Health Fair

Last month was Mental Health Awareness Month.  A Mental Health Fair was held in Greenfield on May 17th and the Mental Health Recovery Services (MHRS) team represented ServiceNet.  The fair was held at Greenfield's Energy Park.  Over a dozen ServiceNet staff and clients worked at the booth, including Josh Cairns from PREP, Jeffrey Beard, Amber Vega, Melissa Kane from Fit Together Mobile, Laura Merritt and her daughter Layla.

DMH Site Director Karen Krawczyk, of the Franklin/North Quabbin Site Office, also stopped by the booth to check out ServiceNet's services. 
One Million Steps

PREP (Prevention and Recovery in Early Psychosis) in Holyoke is working together to meet a challenge of walking one million steps for the summer. Participants and Staff are all using pedometers to keep track of their activity during and outside of program time and have monthly goals that all add up to one million steps walked together by the end of August.

If we reach our goal, we are going to be taking a trip to Six Flags and everyone is really excited to be working together to support each other in becoming more active and fit. Physical exercise plays an important role in mental health and this is just one of the ways PREP is supporting participants and staff alike to work toward a healthier whole person and community.
Teamwork and Staff Training

Lucimara Brasil wanted to send out a big thank you to Elaine Sibley, Marcia Morris, Lorrie Carlson, Heather Jendrysik, and Abir Eldada for promoting a wonderful 3 day training session for the Developmental and Brain Injury Services (DBIS) team. It was a great time, fun moments were had, and delicious food was consumed.  Thank you all for your hard work and dedication.
Garden Club
Spring is here and summer is just around the corner.  Here's a few of our very own staff members and clients who have the green thumb.
  • At the shelter in Greenfield, a guest has taken it upon himself to dig up the weeds along the fence by their parking lot and has been developing it into a garden patch.  Thanks to his work, he is inspiring people to contribute seeds and plants.  Stay tuned for our next issue for a more detailed feature.
Amy Miller, who works in the Information Systems Department (IS), has beautiful President Grévy French Lilacs growing in her garden.

REACH Early Intervention Announcements
REACH is pleased to welcome Theresa Gahagan as our new Administrative Assistant, and Nora Oppenheimer as a new Social Worker!
Michael Hutton-Woodland was recently appointed to the Massachusetts Interagency Coordinating Council’s Fiscal Committee, overseeing financial viability of the state Early Intervention system.
REACH leadership conducted a series of meetings with state elected officials (Senator Anne Gobi, Representative Paul Mark and Representative Solomon Goldstein-Rose) at REACH program sites to thank them for their support of Early Intervention in the state budget!
IDEA System - Featured Idea
What was the problem?
Most staff members think of great ideas while out and about in their travels for their work but are not near their idea board to add their idea.  They then might forget the idea or forget to put it up on the board.

What's the solution?

All staff members now carry a sticky-note pad with them at all times for moments of inspiration.
