Global Ecommerce Happenings
Issue 2, Wednesday, March 10, 2021

The power of the GELF community was on display recently at a private Lunch and Learn event we hosted. Thanks to our Sponsor, ESW (eShopWorld), and to all of the executives who participated, especially our featured speaker, Andrea Elliot, EVP Direct to Consumer at Moose Knuckles, a luxury lifestyle brand. It was a great reminder of why peer-to-peer networking is so important – and a hallmark of these digital executives to openly share with each other. If you’re interested in participating in any of our upcoming “intimate” networking opportunities, let us know!

On to the global ecommerce news…

Global Commerce Innovation: Focus on Social Platforms

How Marketers Can Leverage WeChat

GELF POV: Since the dawn of social media, the hype around social commerce has appeared hyperbolic. Not any more. Even for skeptics of social commerce, it is hard to deny the commerce evolution taking place today among WeChat, Instagram and other digital platforms. At GELF, we believe we have entered a period where brands and retailers will optimize their global growth through a “multi-platform” go-to-market approach -- and socially-driven platforms will be a significant contributor, not a rounding error. We’d love to hear your thoughts on the future of social commerce. Click here to contact us.

Livestreaming Gaining Traction in Europe
Livestreaming is one of the buzziest trends from the pandemic. New research that surveyed 14,460 adults in France, Poland, Spain and the UK explored the state of livestreaming as the foundation of “shoppertainment.” Although still nascent in Europe (compared to Asia), 70% of shoppers expressed interest in shoppertainment specifically, while almost half have increased their consumption of shoppertainment content during the pandemic. The AliExpress-commissioned study found shoppers are “open to embrace new trends and technologies that can enhance their shopping experiences.”

Woah! TikTok Amps Up Focus on Global Ecommerce as Social Platform Moves Beyond Advertising
Despite facing setbacks in India and the US, TikTok surpassed Facebook to become the most downloaded app on iOS and Android platforms in 2020 after its global user base increased by 267% in 2019. Early moves into ecommerce with Shopify signal more are coming; opening up to merchants in the UK and EU Shopify sites in the near future.
