Loreto Highlights Update - 11th February 2022
Father Gavin
Father Gavin, a visiting priest from the UK, came into school this week. Father Gavin led assembly for Yr.5 and 6 and assisted Monsignor Paul Bear with Yr. 5 Confessions this week. The pupils enjoyed the story of Zacchaeus and were encouraged to participate by acting out the scenes.
‘Today salvation has come to this house,’ were the words of Jesus to Zacchaeus. Pupils reflected on this phrase from scripture which demonstrates the extravagant and generous love God has for each and everyone one of us.
Nautilus Talk
The Nautilus Project were in school this week to deliver talks to Yr. 4 and 6.
Pupils in Yr. 4 enjoyed learning all about Sharks and Dolphins.  The talk for Yr. 6 was about Gibraltar’s Shoreline Invertebrates. Pupils as well as teachers enjoyed the presentations.

Chinese wishing trees are a big part of Chinese New Year festivities. 2M tossed their wishes with red ribbons up into the tree with hope that they will come true.
Love Is In The Air!
Year 3 designed their own Valentine’s Day cards during our ICT lesson.
They expressed their creativity by choosing their own background, border and stickers in order to complete their card. The children then printed out their customised creations and they will be delivering them to their parents on Monday.
Faith Diary
This week’s Gospel comes from St. Matthew’s famous ‘Sermon on the Mount’ and contains 8 sayings of Jesus, each starting with the words ‘Blessed are.’  They are known as ‘The Beatitudes’ – which means roughly ‘blessed attitudes’.  Some modern translations replace the word ‘Blessed’ with the word ‘Happy’, but this does not convey the same meaning.  ‘Blessed’ implies a deep and long-lasting spiritual well-being, not necessarily related to immediate circumstances, whereas ‘happy’ denotes what may be only a passing feeling which might have no connection at all with that person’s spiritual condition and makes little sense in the context of some of the sayings.  The Beatitudes are hard for a modern reader to understand, but they signal that, to a true follower of Jesus Christ, what matters are not the many trials we may face in this life, but how we confront them - and the lasting grace we receive when we face them not in our own strength, but in His.
First Aid
This week Miss Grech, Mrs Fisher, Miss Smith, Miss McNally and Mr Devincenzi-Clemens were presented with their First Aid at work certificates.  Congratulations to you all.
Leavers Hoodies
Our Year 6 pupils have been given their 2022 Leavers Hooded tops this week.  They are in a French Navy and grey lining, all looking very smart.
Sacrament of Reconciliation
Year 3 have been learning about forgiveness in preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. They have listened to Bible stories about God's love and mercy such as the Prodigal Son.
Year 1
As part of our topic on toys Year 1 have had a look at the kind of toys children played with in the past.
We asked mums, dads, grandparents about the kind of toys they played with.
Pet's Corner
Welcome to Pet’s Corner – a new feature in our Weekly Update. Every week a pet belonging to a Loreto child will be featured along with a short article on why the pet is special.
This week, we feature Chuckles, the chicken, alongside Alan, the dog.
Chuckles is the very special pet of Oscar in Year 5. Oscar tells us that she is a very calm chicken who enjoys being picked up and stroked. Chuckles cheers people up and always makes clucking sounds when she sees Oscar. She gets on well with Alan, who is quite protective of her.
Thank you, Oscar, for sharing photos of your special pet with us.
