Loreto Highlights Update - 26th June 2022

Special Awards
Pupils in Year 6, joined by their parents, attended their Leavers’ Mass at St Joseph’s Church on Friday morning. Monsignor Paul Bear officiated and wished the children all the very best for their future secondary education.
Two very special awards were presented:-

The Heart of Gold Award – in memory of Helen Menez, a former member of Nursery staff – was presented by Charlie Menez to Evelyn Snatchfold in recognition of her kindness to others.

The Ray of Sunshine Award for Creativity and Compassion is being introduced for the first time this year in memory of Frances Pou – a teaching assistant who sadly passed away this year. Frances’ family attended the service and Ms Sally Pou presented the award to Reuben Carruthers.

A Summer Story
As part of our work on seasonal change, Year 1 have produced some creative writing and artwork about summer.  We made a bucket list of our summer hopes and wishes then made a portrait of ourselves looking forward to our favourite summer activities through our funky summer sunglasses!

Leavers’ Prom
On Friday evening our Year 6 pupils attended their leavers’ prom.  The night was full of celebration, remembering all the good times experienced at Loreto with some pupils having been at the school for 9 years, there was a lot to remember!  The pupils danced the night away with smiles of joy and happiness and enjoyed pizza, sweets, and drinks
Year 2 Graduation
Year 2 graduated from Lower Primary to Upper Primary this week. With their parents help they made a graduation hat and wrote down what they have learnt in Year 2. It was a fun, exciting morning that ended with a song and their Graduation Ceremony.
Loreto Choir
Members from our School Choir attended a reception hosted by His Worship the Mayor, Mr Christian Santos at City Hall on Wednesday evening for the winners and participants of the Cultural Youth Festivals over the last year.

Nautilus Field Trip
As a follow-up to a theory lesson with The Nautilus Project last term, the year 6 children went to Camp Bay this week where they had a first-hand view of marine invertebrates living in and around Gibraltar's shoreline. They were able to observe and hold molluscs including sea snails and Triton snails as well as echinoderms including sea urchins and starfish. Great excitement was had when the sea cucumbers squirted water to equalise their internal pressure when out of the water. A very lively 6 month old octopus also joined us on this outing although it was far too agile for us to handle - we left that up to Lewis!  A huge thank you to Lewis, Melanie and Chandler from The Nautilus Project for spending time with us this week and bringing our school work on invertebrates to life.

Transition Days
At the start of this week those Year 6 pupils who will be attending our local Secondary Schools next year went along to experience taster days.  Prior Park school offered two days where pupils spoke to key members of the school community, experienced lessons, and were able to familiarise themselves with the school surroundings.  They ended with a BBQ for pupils, parents and staff.  Pupils who went to Bayside school for enjoyed a tour of the school, Julianne saying "it was a massive school".  The pupils participated in taster lessons, including Science where they made a rainbow with sugar.
Animal Awareness
On Thursday our Year 4 pupils received a presentation from The Animals Collective.  Colette and Pamela spoke to the pupils about animal welfare, caring for animals and what to do if you see an animal in distress. The highlight of the show were two puppies that the pupils were able to stroke. www.facebook.com/TACcampoDeGibraltar

Faith Diary
Today’s reading from St. Paul speaks to us of freedom and of the importance of using that freedom not to do wrong, but to serve each other in love. In the Gospel Jesus shows us how we are to do this by his example as he sets out to Jerusalem.  He knows the fate that awaits him when he gets there, and he knows that He will be reviled and rejected on the way, but nevertheless, He ‘resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem’. Though this gospel may seem harsh to us, Jesus is reminding us that only great personal sacrifice and total commitment to His teachings and example will make us ‘fit for the Kingdom of God’.
Jimena Trip
The Year 5 pupil's enjoyed an outing to the animal reserve 'La Pequena Africa' in Jimena' where they enjoyed being surrounded by many animals it many animals walking around freely. They  crossed paths paths with Deer, Emu's, Lama's Goats, Peacocks and some very big dogs to name a few. They also enjoyed watching some animals behind their enclosures such as Zebra's, Camels, Lions, birds of prey and a very shy kangaroo. Packed into this busy day full of activities they also enjoyed archery, a horse ride, kayaking, pedal boats and finally an exhilarating zip line across the pond. All in all, a very full and enjoyable day had by both children and teachers alike.
