Faith Diary
In this week’s passage, taken again from Jesus’s farewell discourse recorded in the Gospel of John, Jesus is preparing the apostles for the time when he will no longer be with them. He knows that they will be devastated at his leaving them again, but promises to send them two precious gifts – his Peace, and His Holy Spirit. The Peace he is referring to is not merely the absence of war or trouble, but his deep and perfect Peace, the supernatural Peace ‘that passes all understanding.‘ This Peace, together with the strength that will come from the promised coming of the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Blessed Trinity, will keep Jesus’ presence and teaching alive in their hearts, give them strength and courage, and keep them closely connected both to him and to the Father who sent him.
