The Byrd Center Announces an Updated Mission

Charting the Center's course into the future...

On Wednesday, September 19, the Byrd Center's Executive Committee met and approved an updated mission statement, provided below. The statement has also been approved by the Office of Research and the College of Arts and Sciences.

The mission of the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center is to engage in world-leading research, education, and outreach that enhance The Ohio State University’s programs in:

  • polar and alpine regions,
  • cryospheric processes,
  • reconstruction of past climates,
  • climate variability and change and
  • the impacts of climate on the environment and society.
The mission is achieved by fostering a collaborative, interdisciplinary and inclusive community of investigators with expert project support, specialized facilities and synergistic programs that engage with a diverse audience.

In the Field: Following Byrd Center Researchers

Through 360° videos, you can experience being part of a NASA-funded Arctic expedition as Byrd Center researchers study Greenland’s Jakobshavn Glacier.

These videos were taken during the spring 2018 iteration of the NASA-funded project “Towards an Operational System for Estimating Greenland Ice Sheet Thickness Change from Altimetry”, developed by Byrd Center Principal Investigators Ian Howat and Santiago de la Peña. The field campaign included three team members: Santiago de la Peña and graduate students Michalea King and Sal Candela.
