Workshop: GIS for the Rest of Us

Thursday, August 9, 2018 - 9:00 am to 1:00 pm
Research Commons on the 3rd Floor of OSU's 18th Avenue Library (175 West 18th Avenue, Columbus, OH 43210)

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has revolutionized our ability to visualize and display information connected to locations. Whether you have used Google’s free tools to find aerial photos of your neighborhood, have searched for a friend’s address using the county auditor’s website, or researched the likelihood of your business flooding during a major storm event, GIS tools are at work. This half-day workshop is designed for:

  • Researchers from All Disciplines New to GIS
  • K-12 Educators
  • Informal Educators
  • Members of the Non-Profit Community
  • Community Members Who Want to Learn More

A team of instructors will provide an overview of GIS and mapping tools from Google, Esri, and Tableau and showcase examples of how GIS can be used for research and education. Breakout sessions will provide training for various levels of experience. Participants are highly encouraged to bring their own devices.

Wednesday, October 10, 2018 to
Friday, October 12, 2018

University of Rhode Island Graduate School
of Oceanography

Registration is now open to participate in the Arctic Researchers and Informal Science Education (ARISE) Workshop, sponsored by the National Science Foundation. This workshop is for Arctic researchers (principal investigators) and informal science education professionals and will be held October 10-12, 2018 on the campus of the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography.

Costs for travel, meals, and hotel accommodations associated with the workshop will be covered in full for the first 42 registered participants. Workshop and registration information can be found here.

ARISE Workshop goals are to 1.) provide pathways for broadening the impacts of NSF-funded Arctic research and assist principal investigators in disseminating the results of their research and 2.) increase the informal science education community’s access to and engagement with Arctic scientists. Both of these goals are intended to enhance the public’s learning experiences related to the Arctic environment and NSF-funded research.
