Do more than belong: participate. Do more than care: help.
Do more than believe: practice. Do more than be fair: be kind.
Do more than forgive: forget. Do more than dream: work.”

~William Arthur Ward~

January starts out with the best of intentions - filled with resolutions, promises and new beginnings. We think of new ways to eat better, exercise regularly, start new ventures, finish lingering projects, travel to exotic destinations, work less, enjoy more and basically be kinder, wiser, more productive versions of ourselves. In many ways, this month is more about character than anything else. It is when we figure out who we want to be and how much we care about the various aspects of our lives. Ironically enough, the character trait this month is caring. And if I had to describe Capri with only a few adjectives, caring would be at the top of my list. To me, “caring” essentially means going beyond expectations in every aspect of your life. It is taking that extra step to make sure that the world around you is happy, healthy and productive.

This month at Capri we will have many happy kids. The popular “Principal Prank” happens January 17th at our spirit assembly. The week of January 27 brings us Kindness and Ability Awareness Week- filled with inspirational activities all week long! The 6th graders visit the Farm Lab during this last week as well and will become young entrepreneurs as they gear up for “Salad Wars” and create a salad dressing business.  Finally, that same week, we will host our Annual “Walk the Wheel” for parents to experience our Wheel Program first hand, alongside their children. The healthy child is an ongoing focus for us and we will begin the year by preparing for our Annual Jog-A-Thon event which runs on February 7th. Grab your sneakers and start training with your child!

It goes without saying that our Capri families have been very productive. The wide range of enrichment programs we are able to offer is proof of that. Every single program is not only made possible by your donations, but also your time, talent and hard work. By the way, if you see Lauren Calderone or Denean Mosman on campus this month, be sure to thank them for their hard work in creating and collecting for our Holiday Drive last month. Also, starting this week, new Capri spirit wear will be on display and for sale each morning and afternoon with the goal of making Fridays a school wide “Wear your sprit wear day!”

In my eyes, each and every day, our students, teachers and volunteers walk through the gates of Capri embodying the words of William Arthur Ward. We care about each other and it shows. To paraphrase him, because our families belong to our community, our children get to participate in one of the best educational experiences in the state. Because we do more than care, we help our children learn to grow, explore and thrive on their own. Because we do more than just believe, our children actually practice important life lessons every day. Because we are fair, our children learn to be kind – not only to others, but also to themselves. But most importantly, because we dare to dream, our children have a working foundation to be happy, healthy, productive and very caring adults one day.

With Care,

“Haz más que pertenecer: participa. Haz más que preocuparte: ayuda.
Haz más que creer: practica. Haz más que ser justo: sé amable.
Haz más que perdonar: olvida. Haz más que soñar: trabaja.”
William Arthur Ward

Kinder
Kindergarten students will start looking at sculptures. This week, we will use paper to create a sculpture. Students will practice cutting, designing, making artistic decisions and not adding too much glue.

Reflections! A reflection is one way to show a different perspective. Before the break, students drew a self-portrait, put on glasses and drew what they were looking at! This week we will add color to our self-portrait.

Dear Parents,
Capri Elementary School thrives on being a KIND and INCLUSIVE school! Research confirms that being kind toward others has powerful effects on an individual’s mental health and quality of life. This letter provides additional information about Kindness and Inclusion in Action week and how your family can continue practicing kindness at home.
WHAT IS KINDNESS AND INCLUSION IN ACTION WEEK?
The last week of January (1/27-1/31/20) is Kindness and Inclusion in Action week! During this week, there will be assemblies, lessons, and activities that promote kindness and inclusivity on our campus. We strive to create a culture of kindness in our school where everyone learns what it means to be kind and inclusive regardless of our differences. Having a kind and supportive school environment sets the stage for optimal academic learning.
HOW CAN WE INCORPORATE KIND AND INCLUSIVE ACTIVITIES AT HOME?
Our goal is to encourage students, staff and faculty to incorporate kindness into their lives at school, home, and in their community. Engaging your child on this topic is easy and does not require any special training! Ask your child what they have been learning about kindness and inclusion in school. Discuss situations your family members experience where someone was kind to them or a time when it was hard to be kind. Engage in activities that promote kindness in your community, like volunteering your time together as a family.
ADDITIONAL RESOURCES RELATED TO BEING KIND AND INCLUSIVE:

The Kindness and “Inclusion in Action” Committee

Estimados Padres,

Students residing in the San Dieguito Union High School District (SDUHSD) boundary, who will be in grade 7 in the 2020-21 school year, can apply for an intradistrict transfer (IDT).  An intradistrict transfer is when parents/guardians wish to enroll their student at a school other than the designated school that is in their attendance boundary area.  Your student’s designated school boundary is based on where you physically reside, not what elementary school your student currently attends.  Transfers will be approved on a space-available basis after all students who live in the school’s boundary are enrolled.
The online application window opens Monday, February 3, 2020 @ 8:00 am and closes Friday, February 21, 2020 @ 4:00 pm.
