Solar electricity and solar hot water for the SPCA roof
Our two summer interns, Emma Fischer and Graham Atkinson have been busy finishing the SPCA project with the mentorship of board directors, Gerry Pageau and Gordon Bishop. This latest energy conservation work at the SPCA consisted of installing 30 solar thermal vacuum tubes on the roof linked to a new pre-heat tank that feeds a new heat pump domestic hot water tank. The system eliminates GHG emissions from the old natural gas boiler and cuts ongoing operating costs in half. The equipment was purchased thanks to a generous grant from the Community Forest Legacy Fund and installed thanks to the donation of key labour expertise from Coast Climate Control and Olson Electric. The efforts of many people contributed to this important project.

Along with Gerry, the interns completed 6 evaluations for solar potential and conducted 11 energy audits for SCRD &Gibsons municipal buildings. The SCCSA board hosted a farewell picnic at Porpoise Bay Park and thanked Emma and Graham for their help. Hired through the Canada Summer Jobs program, they both reported that they’ve had an amazing time and learned a lot. Emma is entering her fourth year at UBC while Graham returns to UVic for his third year. Special thanks to Gerry Pageau for going ‘above and beyond’ in daily mentoring and also to Gord Bishop for assistance.
